Just got back from a road trip....You would need charging stations to accommodate. hundreds if not a thousands of cars along the interstate The time it takes to charge an electric car can be as little as 30 minutes or more than 12 hours. This depends on the size of the battery and the speed of the charging point. A typical electric car (60kWh battery) takes just under 8 hours to charge from empty-to-full with a 7kW charging point. so they could take off using solar power, then, once they are in teh air, they could run on wind if you put a windmill on top because they would be moving so fast that the windpower generated would keep it going

I recall seeing a glider like airplane which could stay aloft almost indefinitely using photo cells to power the prop. I doubt it had more than a few pounds payload tho.
