IOWA CITY, Iowa (Reuters) - Hundreds of people gathered in Iowa City on Friday to watch teenage activist Greta Thunberg speak at a rally to demand that political leaders and institutions take urgent action to combat climate change.
Demonstrators, including many young activists, held signs that read If you breathe the air you should care and Science not silence as they waited for the young Swede to take the stage on the campus of the University of Iowa.
I am more than excited, said Iowa City resident Philinise Hamlin, 41. Change doesnt start until we put our foot forward and try to make it happen.
Thunbergs campaign demanding that world leaders tackle climate change began as a lonely vigil outside the Swedish parliament, but saw her rise to address the United Nations on the issue last month, and took her to Iowa City on Friday.
The 16-year-old stopped in the Midwestern city, located in the state that will hold the first of next years U.S. presidential nominating contests, as part of her tour of North America ahead of a U.N.-sponsored climate conference in Santiago, Chile, in December.
She is the face of climate change, said Lena Kosinski, a 21-year-old student at the University of Iowa. Its nice to have not only a young person, but a female leading the change.
In recent weeks, millions of people have poured onto streets around the globe in protests inspired by Thunberg to demand governments take urgent action on climate change.
Students in Iowa City said Thunbergs visit was a testament to their efforts to demand change from local leaders.
We are honored. We are inspired. We are emboldened. And we say, no more excuses, Student Climate Strike Iowa City, which organized the visit, said on Twitter ahead of the event.

Yeah, really. Pretty pathetic crowd, especially since half of them were press, and another 25% were her entourage.
Yeah...that's what happened.
I feel sorry for her. She is being majorly manipulated. I hope someday she will see through the abuse that has been put on her.
How did the little a-hole GET to Iowa? Another green stunt like her sailboat? You know...the green sailboat made of carbon fiber, fiberglass, nylon, metals like brass, aluminum and steel which were ripped from the earth. Lead in batteries. Rare earth minerals in batteries and a few solar panels. Gold and silver used in her cell phone and computer?
Very “green”.
This substandard on every measure teen loser should be thrown out of this country. Her abusive parents should be arrested for abusing her. She is mentally challenged in many ways yet sheep nitwits worship her. I am going to burn an old tire in her “honor” every day that this idiot zombie is violating our country by her presence.

She is what Greta is going to turn into if she doesn’t change her attitude.
Because they’d kill her in China!
Number 500???????!!!!!
I understand that her global warming propaganda time would be better spent in China.
And when will she be visiting China, India, Tiawan, etc? Get back to me after she lectures them (the worst pollution offenders in the world).
