Mitch McConnell raises money vowing to stop impeachment
CNN ^ | Oct. 4, 2019 | Alex Rogers

In a new campaign video on Facebook, Senate Majority Mitch McConnell pitches himself as the man who can end the House's impeachment inquiry, a sign of how the chief Republican in the chamber might handle an impeachment trial should the House pass articles charging President Donald Trump with crimes.

"Nancy Pelosi is in the clutches of a left-wing mob," McConnell says directly to a camera. "They've finally convinced her to impeach the President. All of you know your Constitution. The way that impeachment stops is a Senate majority, with me as majority leader."

"But I need your help," he adds. "Please contribute before the deadline."

Thanks for that fair comment.

Recognizing his limitations, I kind of like old Yertle and give him full credit for the things he does well, mainly the judicial appointments. He may not be everything we want in an aggressive majority leader, but he’s what we’ve got and we could have done a lot worse.

Lumping Mitch, as some have done on these threads, with RINO Ryan and Mitt Romney, is grossly unfair.

How does raising money stop the impeachment? All it takes is for him to vote against it. He’s pocketing the $$$$.

He has vowed to make any Senate ‘trial” short and get on to regular business....Senate rules say it has to be taken up if the House impeaches....but the House (Pelousy) ain’t following it’s rules.
Since the President has said he won’t cooperate unless the House follows its own rules and has a floor vote, maybe McConnell should also chime in about that.

I sent him a tweet that if he publicly says that if she sends an impeachment to him without following Hose rules and holding a whole floor vote, he will consider the impeachment invalid and will not feel obligated to follow his rules on an invalid declaration of impeachment - if he does that, I will send him a donation.

Good for Senator McConnell. Mark Levin had a huge message for the GOP Senate and how to handle the Fake Impeachment if it gets to them. I hope he takes his advise.

There is a fourth option. Given that they have the sole power to try impeachments, the Senate could immediately form a select committee for “pre trial” process and begin discovery to establish whether there is “probable cause” or whether the Senate should just dismiss any proceedings as a political witchhunt under their sole power of trial. To establish probable cause would require them to immediately take depositions and testimony of anyone providing evidence on the house side including from house members having evidence, such as Shifty.

Absolutely correct!

Mitch McConnell and the Republican majority US Senate must give President Trump the most rigorous defense in history; one that seals his re-election!

President Trump is innocent of all the Adam Schitt/whistleblower concocted allegations. He is entitled to “prove his innocence” by exposing the widespread corruption and conspiracy on the other side.

He is entitled to nail Adam Schitt, Nancy Pelosi, the spy(s) in the White House, the whistleblower, and all co-conspirators.

technically they are inseparable, provided each Chamber follows its well-understood rules of order. If the House dispenses with a roll call vote and simply “deems” the President to be impeached, then that would change the calculus in the Senate. As president of the Senate, McConnell could reinterpret the rules and determine he House Articles carry no legitimacy. But as the sole authority to hold an impeachment trial, by logic the Senate could also determine NOT to hold one.

We all know that a vote has to be taken before it can go to the Senate. There is no question on the matter.

Your hypothetical is in your mind only. It has no validity.

Having balls can be contagious.

It makes some weak men strong and it gives a leader that special something that leads their men to victory by giving them strength.

... it HAS to go to trial ...

I used to think that too. Then I read the Constitution.

After Articles of Impeachment are voted for on the House floor. the Constitution mandates that four things occur:

1. It declares that the Senate chamber is the only venue where an impeachment trial of a federal official is to be held. Not any courtroom, no judge's chamber, no state house, outhouse or whorehouse anywhere else in the country.

2. All Senators must swear an oath to sit on the impeachment trial.

3. If the President is impeached, the presiding judge is the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court. No one else is allowed.

4. Conviction and removal happen when 2/3 of the voting members present vote to convict.

These are the only Constitutional mandates laid upon the Senate. The timing of the trial is for the Senate to decide. And yes, the Senate is free to decline to have a trial, which they did in one impeachment.
