But this HAD TO blow up in their face. In 2019 anyone who works there and didn’t know that is a moron or a robot.

The problem is that they lied to the people about what they were doing.
They should’ve just explained that they needed more data and needed volunteers.

It's not just dark images, it's the lack of color variations from shadows and across the face. Facial recognition generally forms a general shape based on the darker eyes/undernose. Lighter forehead/cheeks/nose. Especially for darker black people, the math that 'blurs' the image into the general matrix for a face, creates more of a dark circle, not a general eyes/nose. So unless lighting is really good, it tends to not work as well for them.
