Fox News’s on air war cools off – for now: It looks like Shepard Smith may be the loser

The incendiary on air war that broke out earlier this week, pitting several of the most prominent Fox News channel personalities against each other, has cooled off for the moment. The sudden flare-up of simmering grudges between Fox News’s opinion and news sides that finally boiled over into public view involved opinion host Tucker Carlson, news host Shepard Smith, and the channel’s senior legal analyst Andrew Napolitano. The war of harsh words that went back and forth on Carlson’s and Smith’s programs Tuesday and Wednesday, which also involved Carlson’s guest, Republican attorney Joseph diGenova, was unprecedented and was immediately seized on by a wide range of media as evidence of serious trouble at the country’s highest rated cable news channel.

Gabriel Sherman is the author of a critical biography of the late Fox News co-founder Roger Ailes and he writes often about goings on at FNC for left wing publications. On Thursday, Sherman posted a new article at Vanity Fair, “’It’s Management Bedlam’: Madness at Fox News as Trump Faces Impeachment.” Citing his usual, unnamed, anonymous sources, Sherman wrote:

Seeking to quell the internecine strife before it carried into a third day, Fox News CEO Suzanne Scott and president Jay Wallace communicated to Smith this morning [Thursday September 27] to stop attacking Carlson, a person briefed on the conversation said. “They said if he does it again, he’s off the air,” the source said. (Fox News spokesperson Irena Briganti denied that management had any direct conversation with Smith).

Sherman buttressed his article with additional unsourced tidbits that represent raw, ideological red meat for his magazine’s Fox News-hating readers:

“Laura Ingraham is so insufferable with her hysterics.”
Agree. Can’t watch her lately just to painful, constantly talking over guests. Same thing with Leyland Vitter on the weekend, he never stops interrupting guests. Used to occasionally turn on Fox on the weekend afternoon, Not anymore.

I don't believe, not for a second, that FNC suits threatened the fag shep.

The queer would have gone open fly to all his fag friends and the entire media would have gone berserk.

FNC management doesn't have the good judgement nor the stones to chastise the 3:00 PM queen of faux.

Agree. I find Cavuto’s personality and passive-agressive style to be highly irritating. He’s the little punk who never steeped foot on the field of athletic competition but made snide remarks about everyone who did.

He could stand a good kick in the ass.

I don’t understand why people go on Fox since they can’t get a word in edgewise. The guest pay contracts must be good or something.

Did laura just get a new set of teeth implants?

Her upper set of teeth don't look the same, it's not quite, but almost, the AOS horse look.

I don’t have cable. I have tried to use Fox News online, but it has become NPR-lite. Or maybe “National Review Lite”.

I voted for Cruz in the primaries. Trump has been a delightful surprise. Never Trumpers need to go the the lowest levels of Dante’s hell. National Review and Fox News can tag along with them.

No need to do that. He’s already working for a liberal network.

You reading all this,FNC?

Fox News Channel attracted more prime-time viewers than CNN and MSNBC combined last week, adding to its streak as the most-watched basic cable network.

Fox News averaged 2.3 million viewers during the hours of 8-11 p.m. ET from June 10-16, while MSNBC finished second with an average of 1.5 million. HGTV, A&E and USA joined them among the top five, while CNN averaged just 744,000 to finish 14th.

FNC also took the crown among total day viewers, averaging 1.2 million, while no other basic cable networks cracked the million-viewer mark. MSNBC came in second, averaging 850,000; CNN attracted 519,000 total day viewers.

Fox News has now finished first in the total day category for 23 straight weeks.

Fox News averaged 315,000 prime-time viewers among the key demographic of adults ages 25-54, compared to 192,000 for MSNBC and 173,000 for CNN.

While MSNBC topped liberal rival CNN, the home of Rachel Maddow still finished with its lowest-rated week of 2019 in both total day and prime-time viewership in the key demo.

They might not care too much, at least not just yet.

Steven Hayes, a buddy of Bill Kristol, also shows up as a Fox News Commentator. Fox goes off at my house, immediately, when that happens

It should be obvious to all of us by now that the survival of the deep state cabal is way more important than market share or money. The cabal will grind all the way to zero before they give an inch
Trump is an existential threat. He must be marginalized even at the risk of total extinction of fox news in the eyes of a bit over half of the country.
So, Fox won’t replace any of the TDS folks. They are serving the purpose of marginalizing our President.

Things HAVE been testy lately. Hannity spatting with Tucker and Laura. Martha McCallum revealing herself like a butterfly, and ‘Shep’ and Andrew sentencing Trump. They’ve all cooled. Maybe upper management seeing a dangerouse cliff up ahead for FOX, drop kicked them in an urgent in house meeting. I now am skeptical of almost every personilty on FOX. I do like Dan Bongino and Katie Pavlich....Though. The rest...?

I wanted to bust angelic-looking, so-earnest appearing Ed Henry smack in the chops yesterday. His interviews with our great guys Rep. Matt Gaetz and also (shooting hero) Rep. Steve Scalise were beyond the pale in intensity, nastiness and both overt and covert anti-Trumpism.

Fox has been getting on my final nerve for a long while now....and my viewing choices on its programming has dramatically narrowed down.
