Vice President Joe Biden’s son, Hunter Biden, resigned his direct commission as an ensign in the U.S. Naval Reserve, it was reported recently. Although he was 43 years old at the time of his commissioning, three years over age, he sought an age waiver and got it.
Biden was serving as a public affairs officer; mostly, he went to Norfolk, Va., once a month and did a weekend of service. The twist here is that Biden was forced to resign because he had tested positive for cocaine in June 2013.
A direct commission is a little-known entry point to get into the military. It’s a way for experienced professionals to serve; it’s mostly done for doctors, nurses and dentists. But age 40 is pretty much the brick wall for those outside of those disciplines.
I know this because I tried to get an age waiver for a direct commission as a Naval Reserve public affairs officer in 2002.
I was at least two years younger than Biden.
My experience in the Naval Reserve recruiting process was labyrinthine. I tried several times to get interviews by recruiters and eventually was asked by one of them if I “knew any senators.”
I did. Actually, the senators weren’t as much help as a few new friends in the Naval Reserve who held high ranks. I was then asked to go to the Pentagon to interview.
The interviews went well, and it probably didn’t hurt that I had a cartoon on The Washington Post editorial page that morning. As I sat down in a captain’s office, I looked out his window to a freshly plastered wall in one of the inner rings of the Pentagon.
“See that?” he asked. “That’s where the nose cone of the plane stopped.”

This one will be a bit tricky for the Democrats. They will be exiting Biden within a month but somehow they will try to smear Trump with the shame of the Biden family crimes. They desperately want Biden out and it would appear they have settled on Warren. Wonder if Joe really understands what is happening.

Mmmmmm....Biden's presser leaning on Democrats to impeach Trump.....to stop a 2020 Trump win.....was a real crowd-pleaser (cackle).
The bigger question in my mind is, why hasn’t AG Barr started criminal charges against Joe Biden for bribing foreign officials? Surely AG Barr has enough evidence to proceed so what else does he need to do his job?
I am starting to think that Barr is as useless as that rat Sessions was. Also, where is jerk that runs the FBI? Biden is an admitted criminal so where is the arrest warrant?
Democrats are above the law. The law is for the Commoners and Republicans.
Retired Navy officer who was commissioned through the Enlisted Commissioning Program (Mustang, in other words). The only fellow Navy officers I ever knew who were direct-commissioned were doctors, nurses and similar professionals (at the time, the Navy was hot for doctors in certain specialty fields like cardiology and orthopedics and was throwing seriously big money at them to convince them to join). And even at that, most still had to successfully make it through the easy-easy Officer Indoctrination School at Newport, RI (surprisingly, some don’t make it... go figure).
I met one PAO who was a direct commission and he didn’t seem all that impressive to me. OF COURSE Joe Biden’s son was “hooked up.” Just like he was hooked up to the tune of millions on those Ukraine and China deals. And for Joe Biden to pull a Sergeant Schultz and tell us he knew nothing — NOTHING — about it all strains the bounds of credulity.
Yes I agree with you! The worst thing happening to Biden is dropping out of the race? What a damn joke and a major victory for the Democrats and the deep state.

My daughter is an Air Force Officer who received a direct commission more than 10 years ago after completing professional school. Even with an advanced degree, her acceptance was not a foregone conclusion. She had to compete for the slot. Since her commissioning, she has worked hard and earned higher rank. She views her job and her service as important and takes no short-cuts, even though it means much time away from her husband and young daughter. So, when I read about a troubled, spoiled, young man who has had everything just handed to him (although I am guessing he had to use a wheel barrel to cart away the Ukrainian and Chinese cash), I am outraged for all those in our military who earned their way and willingly sacrificed for our country. For Biden’s son, it seems like being a PAO was just another ticket to punch on his way to riches.

It could break the other way. Just the constant mention of Biden's name by the communist media for the next few months, and little mention of the others, may lead to Biden winning the Democrat nomination.
