GM stops paying for health care coverage for striking UAW members

General Motors is playing hardball with striking UAW members.

The company is pulling the plug on the healthcare coverage effective Tuesday, Sept. 17. That means the tab will have to be picked up by the union for workers to continue coverage. The same fund that pays workers $250 a week strike pay, and there's a total $750 million in the fund.

“How I look at it is, we’re here for the company, we were here for them during all the downturns," said Stephanie Carpenter, a 22-year employee of GM who was picketing in front of the company's headquarters Tuesday. "They need to be here for us now.”

Notices are being post on UAW local Facebook pages fueling the concerns of workers. The notice states, "Heads up to all active workers, GM has canceled out health care."

“The problem with strikes....no matter what you get for an increase, you’ll never get the lost salary back.”

Summer vacay is worth it to these poorly educated collectivist poster children.

Agreed. All Cobra is ... is a guarantee of coverage if you continue to pay the premium that you (your portion) AND your employer (employer portion) paid.

I’ll celebrate when GM pays back taxpayers $15 billion PLUS interest for the past 10 years.

GM was there for HER. Paying her, keeping her employed, paying for her healthcare, pension and other benefits, and offering golden parachutes to workers already eligible to retire so they wouldn't have to lay off the younger workers under UNION RULES.

Meanwhile, UAW accepted 26 Billion Dollars from WE, THE TAXPAYERS.

So Stephanie, what exactly did YOU do during "all the downturns" other than show up and do the job you were being PAID to do?

I am, in general, pro-union. Because it’s a free country. Organize if you want to. And I’ve seen too many abusive managers. So if you want to form a union to protect your workers - and to bargain as a single unit - then go right ahead.

But I am also in favor of a level playing field. So if a union plays its trump card and strikes, then management should be able to play its trump card and withhold benefits. And management should also be able to hire permanent replacement workers if it wants to.

After all, it’s a free country. For management and for workers alike.

And just wait until the strikers get a load of the premiums that GM was paying as the employer share of their CADILLAC HEALTH PLANS — premiums that THEY will now have to pay under Cobra if they with to continue coverage.

Union members appear to be unconcerned about offshoring.

We are self employed late 50’s. That is what it cost.

Not all of us have cushy gov’t jobs, Medicare or union with cushy health insurance plans.

Our friends are 63 and their couple coverage is $2600 month-same $7500 deductible each.

This why Republicans really dropped the ball on HC. It is going to be the election breaker one way or another.

Good. Employees pay a teeny weeny percent so maybe they need to start paying what everyone else does.
