WikiLeaks founder’s custody will be extended after current prison terms comes to end

Julian Assange will stay in prison after the custody period on his current jail term ends because of his “history of absconding”.

As home secretary, Sajid Javid signed an order in June allowing Assange’s extradition to the US over hacking allegations. A 50-week jail term was imposed in the UK after he had jumped previous bail by going into hiding in the Ecuadorian embassy in London.

The WikiLeaks founder would have been released from HMP Belmarsh on 22 September, Westminster magistrates court heard on Friday, but he was told he would be kept in jail because of “substantial grounds” for believing he would abscond again.

Assange, 48, who is an Australian citizen, appeared by video-link wearing a loose-fitting T-shirt.

District judge Vanessa Baraitser told him: “You have been produced today because your sentence of imprisonment is about to come to an end. When that happens your remand status changes from a serving prisoner to a person facing extradition.

A request for extradition has to go through the courts, it’s a judicial decision, not an executive one by the British government.

“by going into hiding in the Ecuadorian embassy in London”

One doesn’t “hide” by publicly applying for asylum in a foreign embassy...

***Has the US formally requested that the UK extradite Assange? If so, by refusing, is the UK now in violation of the Geneva and/or Hague Convention/s? ***

Shortly after the US secured big bucks for the Ecuadorian Gov’t from the IMF and Assange was forcefully removed, the US filed for extradition. IIRC, the hearing is slated for January 2020.

In the mean time, the UK has held various hearings w/o notifying Assange’s lawyers. The last hearing, this past week, there was no transcript, the judge mumbled two inaudible sentences, and it was over.

The UN office on human rights and torture has demanded Assange be released. Belmarsh Prison is the prison where convicted terrorists and serial murderers are sent.

This is firmly Trump’s DOJ since the indictments extradition, etc began with Jeff Sessions. Pompeo got the $$$ for Ecuador.
Julian Assange exposed ugly Truths. He will be a Martyr for Truth, and a Victim of Corrupt, Criminal Governments, most especially my Government.

Two things that have made me regret ever trusting President Donald Trump..”Wikileaks-I love WikiLeaks” during the campaign, then post election..”I know nothing about WikiLeaks”

And his saying during the campaign, we would leave Syria, and what a lie that was.
