Affirmative Action and NASA

In the 47 years since the last man set foot on the moon, the space program has changed a great deal. One of those changes has been incorporating mandated affirmative action policies. These policies have had an incredibly negative effect on both the progress in the space program and the engineers whose careers have been destroyed by them.

The federal government mandates that a given percentage of work on a government contract go to minority-owned businesses. When building a large and complicated system like a space vehicle, it is almost impossible for a company like Boeing or Lockheed to meet this requirement by hiring out specific design work to small, minority-owned companies. Even if that were feasible, those companies do not exist.

Worked for a sub for the space shuttle from '75-2011. Saw a lot of hiring done by the company I worked for and by NASA that were simply filing quotas. To the detriment of the program. Special treatment is NOT equal treatment.

Whitey on the moon:

These days _nobody_ is going on a manned lunar mission.

(Lots of brave talk, but no action...)

Great link—thanks.

I am retired from .gov now, but all attempts to “reform” management have been catastrophic failures, because senior managers _want_ them to fail.

Nothing crushes morale quicker than lip service to continuous improvement while everything gets worse and worse.

Trump hasn’t even attempted to take on _that_ issue, and I don’t really blame him.

Slashing budgets is the only language these agencies understand.

Their “mission” is powerpoint slides and meetings pretending they are doing something (and lobbying for more money).

You can have excellence or affirmative action but you can’t have both...

Nope, not a chance. Just visit the houston space center and watch the 2019 movie “Apollo 11” and you will understand how far we have fallen.

How can that be? According to FR’s clown car defeatists, federal employees are all 10-foot-tall Rambos with Einstein brain power.
