I live in a _small_ town where almost everyone is of Norwegian ancestry.
My wife is of German/Irish ancestry and she goes to the local Lutheran church (which I do _not_ attend).
The guest speaker on Sunday at the Lutheran church is a rabbi—and he made the gaffe of asking everyone in church if any of them knew a Jewish person.
(Trust me—_everybody_ in town knows _me_.) ;-)
Apologize? That would be very white of him.
Jews were/are often merchants, an admirable profession. Driving a hard bargain in a MUST if you run a business.
That said, the original use of the term "Jewing someone down" wasn't just meant as a slur against Jews, it was a slur against merchants (who, by the upper classes in Europe and the U.S. to a lesser degree, were considered "lower class.")
In my humble opinion, it is an honor to be a merchant...an entrepreneur.
And an honor to be a Jewish merchant.
A peculiarly American honor.
F*ck the upper classes.
Kudos to Jewish merchants who live by driving a hard bargain...and all other merchants who do the same.
As a businessman, I say to my fellow businessmen, it takes a smart negotiator to know the importance of driving a hard bargain. And your competition and those with whom you bargain respect you for your bargaining prowess.
If it weren't for the PC crap forced upon us by the Left, I would proudly say to all aspiring business leaders: "learn to negotiate like a successful Jewish merchant...learn to Jew them down."
So, is she going to Welch on her apology? Does that make her an Indian giver, or just her being niggardly with sincerity?
verb (used with object)
(lowercase) Offensive. to bargain sharply with; beat down in price (often followed by down).
Began because Jews tended to be very astute businessmen and would “Jew down” the asking price of what others wanted to sell so they could get it at the best possible price....
Pushing it to make it a slur against Jews....
That’s an old expression, as far as I know. Hasn’t been said much if at all around me since the 1970s. I only remember maybe one or two older people saying it—people who were probably born in the 1920s. It always struck me as a strange figure of speech. Most often, if I remember correctly, someone was proudly bragging about having talked someone else down on a price, making the use of the phrase even more weird.
"Kathy McBride allegedly said during a Sept. 5 executive session that a city attorney was able to wait her out and Jew her down to the lower amount. The city attorney to whom she was referring is Jewish, The Trentonian reported."
I was hoping to read this followed by:
"and without breaking stride, the city attorney replied, "we shouldn't act so niggardly" ".
The Trenton City Council members were quite niggardly in their apologies
cotton pickin
that’s racist!
Had a similar gaffe, a bad one, about that year.
I honestly, in a casual conversation was thinking of saying the word “gypped” or “screwed” .. and of all the times to get tongue tied ... I said “Jewed”. !!!! To a feller last name Gold. He was not amused. I’ve since learned that “gypped” is probably perjorative too, but I never meant to say that word, and never meant to say anything bad. I’m sure I tried to explain this, though I’m not sure if I was convincing.
It’s occurred to me over the years that many bad things have happened to due to misunderstandings or miscommunication, or people hearing things, or saying things, that didn’t actually happen. Sometimes people just take things the wrong way. In this case I sure said it the wrong way!
It wasn’t until later in life where I heard some people throw around anti-semitic statements like that casually. It was kind of weird, like finding out someone you seemingly thought was reasonably intelligent is a liberal democrat.
Yeah, when I was a kid, the word ‘gyp’ was very common. I would hope the gypsies took that as a compliment.
Don’t forget about “Jewish lightning”. Insurance fraud.
Blacks get a free pass calling white men, white boy. But dont no white boy ever say that about a black man, or even a black kid.
“...when I have to use an /s at the end of something OBVIOUS because someone might not get it ...”
That’s called “being snowflaked”... /s /s /s /s (in case any snowflakes get their panties in a wedgie...)
:^)
I coach lacrosse at a Catholic HS. My wife and kids are Jewish. I grew up, since 4 years old, in a very reformed Jewish house bc my mom married a Jew and converted. I consider my self Jewish though I never converted.
In my first season at this school, during a game timeout, one of the best players said that ref with a big nose is such a Jew. He wont give me anything. Meaning... he wasnt calling penalties.
I stopped all coaching adjustments. I said Kyle take a seat for a quarter. That was offensive and stupid. It is not the way to think or speak. You have no idea who can hear you and how stupid you sound. You might even be speaking in earshot of a coach that has an entire family of Jews.
Nothing like that ever happened again with any player. But you know that language was used in his household. The father wouldn’t look me in the eye at our end of season banquet and transferred him the following year.
Interestingly, last year I hired a guy with very Christian sounding name. He called me on a Sunday and asked if he was interrupting plans for church. I said, no we are Jewish. He laughed and said wow so two Jews are leading the (mascots) in to battle? I wonder how many parents know!
I so totally agree with you! I am 75 and recall all the jokes about my heritage (Italian and Polish) when I was a kid and young adult. I never let it bother me because my father taught me that sticks and stones may break my bones, but names can never hurt me. I sure wish people believed in that today!
Or Jerry-rig something!
I guess you thought a sarc tag was unnecessary, well,
THEY ARE ALWAYS NECESSARY!
I couldn’t tell if you meant to be sarcastic or not.
BUT, if not, I agree with your entire statement.
STOP apologizing! If I had a dime for every time I said “nigger rich, “pollack”, or “jew them down”, I’d have around ten bucks.
I’m guessing that I am older than you, but we need to STOP kowtowing to the Liberal PC agenda.
Okay, I get it, those words/phrases are “insensitive” in today’s culture, but “Drag Queen Story Time”, children deciding what sex they are, men using women’s bathrooms, men competing in women’s sports, communal unisex shower/dressing rooms, Boy Scouts of America accepting homosexual men to go on overnight camping trips with young boys, men marrying men and running for president, and on and on, are ACCEPTABLE in today’s culture?
And someone is “concerned” that someone used an “old timey” phrase about bargaining?
It truly is a Bizarro World. (even spell check never heard of Bizarro World)
For you younger folks ...
Wikipedia
“The Bizarro World (also known as Htrae, which is “Earth” spelled backwards) is a fictional planet appearing in American comic books published by DC Comics. Introduced in the early 1960s, htraE is a cube-shaped planet, home to Bizarro and companions, all of whom were initially Bizarro versions of Superman, Lois Lane and their children and, later, other Bizarros including Batzarro, the World’s Worst Detective.
In popular culture, “Bizarro World” has come to mean a situation or setting which is weirdly inverted or opposite to expectations.”
Urban Dictionary:
bizarro world. A world where everything is the exact opposite. Up is down, first is last, good is bad, wrong is right, white is black, logical is illogical, giving is taking, insanity is sane, liberty is tyranny, and vice versa. It’s a place where literally, the sky is forest green and the trees are sky blue.
The Peaky Blinders just killed almost everybody. Don’t recall them gypping anyone. But Charlie Chaplin was a gypsie on his mother’s side.
