Kalifornia has been on my "no travel" list for about 40 years.The last time I set foot in the state was in the early 80s...and *that* visit was simply to change planes on the way home from Asia.
But today it's easy to bypass Kalifornia (and Hawaii) when traveling between the East Coast and the western and southern Pacific.
I truly don't see myself ever again setting foot in Hawaii or any part of the Pacific Time Zone.

I bought a truck from a guy in California and drove down to pick it up. That was my one and only visit to the dark side.

Gotta say, even to this day, I would rather visit California and Hawaii than Massachusetts or any part of the eastern time zone.

I occasionally have to transit through the San Francisco airport going back to HK for a visit.
I never buy anything at the airport.
If I can fly another route, I will.
