Lawmaker rips MLB for refusing to let Mets wear 9/11 tribute hats

A Brooklyn lawmaker is accusing Major League Baseball of disrespecting 9/11 first responders by refusing to allow the Mets to wear caps honoring the heroes on the anniversary of the terrorist attacks.
City Councilman Justin Brannan fired off a scathing letter to MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred last week demanding the league let the Mets wear caps emblazoned with NYPD, FDNY and other first-responder agencies for the anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks. Any other teams wishing to do so should be allowed also, Brannan wrote.
The Bay Ridge-based Democrat made the plea after MLB rejected the teams latest request made through star rookie slugger Pete Alonso to wear the special caps during a home game last Wednesday on the 18th anniversary of 9/11.
This [MLB] decision was a real slap in the face to all the first responders who stepped up during the worst terrorist attack in the history of our nation, with many making the ultimate sacrifice, right here in the greatest city in the world where the Mets play, Brannan wrote Manfred.
This isnt just about New York City, its about America, the pol seethed.

I agree with him, especially since the Houston Astros were allowed to wear special hat honoring the Moon landing.

Well, MLB is evolving toward political correctness. Perhaps MLB would have allowed the tribute hats if they had Somebody did something embroidered on the hats.

It makes you wonder how decisions are made in sports.
They allow pink bats for breast cancer awareness, I believe?
They have rainbow nights to honor homosexuality.
But we can’t honor 9/11 first responders?
And the NFL declined the Dallas Cowboys request to put decals on helmets, to honor the five Dallas police officers killed in a mass shooting a few years ago.

They don’t want to offend the former Resident and Muslims everywhere.

Alonso had shoes made up for each player, didn’t bother to ask permission. We like Alonso.

It is easier to seek forgiveness than ask permission.
The Mets should have just worn the hats.
To: billyboy15
Pete Alonso did have some special tribute shoes made.

I like Alonso too, in spite of the uniform he wears.

I read about that. I’m not a Mets fan but I am now a Pete Alonso fan.

Agree, completely.
And, I’m an Astros fan.

Pro sports leagues have some really Byzantine rules about uniforms. Players generally have the right to use their own brands of shoes even in leagues like the NFL that are anal about uniforms.

I don't like it when they change their uniform for any special purpose. I am very aware of breast cancer, gay pride, prostate cancer, Jackie Robinson, etc. I watch baseball to be LESS aware of these things for a couple of hours. But since they do promote these topics it sets them up for requests to "raise awareness" for all sorts of other things and whenever they say no, then of course some folks are going to be upset.

If: Professional sports
Then: Corrupt
Period.
Not the players, or not most of them, but most certainly the “leadership” of semi-sentient morons.

I don't like pink for Mother's Day or blue for Father's day or camo for Memorial Day or Spanish team names for Hispanic Day. And the "Player's Weekend" is also BS, particularly this year with the black and white uniforms.
