The UAW announced Sunday morning that it would strike "effective at midnight tonight" after contract negotiations fell through.
During a press conference on Sunday, the union's vice president said it informed GM that its membership would follow through after the contract ended Saturday at 11:59 p.m..
"This is our last resort," said VP Terry Dittes.
A spokesman said the strike impacts about 48,000 UAW workers at GM plants across the country.

Government Motors’ board and the UAW’s leadership deserve each other.
Note to the rank and file: You lot are nuts. Decertify your union before it’s too late.
Ok. You just made it safe for me to own up to having owned a 1972 Vega. School bus orange.
A girl at work recently bought a new Buick. I just laugh at her.
The UAW owns a very large portion of Government Motors. The very best outcome would for the both of them to go belly up.
We survived before they came into being and we shall survive without them.
They have become too big to NOT fail.
GM and I parted company a very long time ago. Haven’t missed them at all.
This union hand knows these Union hands are sponging scum buckets. I remember seeing stuff well over a decade ago that janitors in their union were making over $50/hr.
Killing the hands that feeds you. Exactly what unions should not do.
As long as the UAW doesn’t strike the Japanese or European car builders here, I’m good. I’ll NEVER buy a car built by people who:
1) Hate their job
2) Hate their company
3) Hate their country
Oh wait, those foreign companies don’t deal with the UAW.
I certainly hope and pray that your taste in vehicles has evolved.
Lemmings, just “effin lemmings. Follow the leaders to unemployment.* I wonder if the union, UAW, is solvent enough
to pay strike benefits to 48,000 idiots. Unions have been on the way out of existence for decades. This may end GM and UAW, for good.
* the leaders will be compensated for the duration of the strike.
Check out the salaries of the leaders and you won’t complain about corporate salaries again.
Had a wagon. Their motors were so bad, I put a 400 small block in mine. Daily driver too.
Every time I think I might give GM another chance, they give me another reason to stay away.
So is UAW on strike against itself?
[2020 Corvette]
I’d love to have a couple.
Notwithstanding Government Motors and their Democrat UAW.
Recently had a GMC Terrain as a rental.
What a piece of crap
Very glad to get back to my 2011 Nissan Armada!
I
HAH!!!
Overheard a conversation between a lady and her friend in regards to her lease Escalade. Cussed it thoroughly, dealer was worthless, couldn't fix it, etc...thank God the lease was up soon.
Her friend agreed, and asked what she planned to replace it with.
"Oh, a white one, I guess."
[So is UAW on strike against itself?]
It’s their Fight for $15!
Didnt obummeregive GM to the Union Thugs?
I was shocked how great it came out.
I’m not a Chevy fan but they hit this one out of the park.
GM is now sold out for all of 2020 and only taking orders for 2021.
Full confession... Nova, S-10 Blazer, Nova redux, Prizm, now a Colorado. I miss my 2 Ford Sport Tracs
I’ve only seen a couple of pictures.
Good thing I’ve never won Powerball. I’d have 100 cars. At least.
Why didn’t I call that girl whose family has a great business? LOL
OOPS (smacks forehead)
Then there was the gal getting her doctorate (don’t remember in what) WHILE she was in medical school. Just a slight overachiever.
LOL
