I guess I was under the mistaken impression that one had to be a legal resident of the US for 5 years to become a citizen. If that is not a law, it should be. Thanks for the clarification though!

That is correct, but you are mixing up two things. One is the time to live in the US with a Green Card in order to naturalize (which is indeed five years). The other is a rule that applies to US citizens who want to transit that citizenship by blood. Essentially there is a requirement for some blood transmissions of citizenship that the parent not only be a USC, but that he/she also lived a certain number of years on US soil as a USC.

We don't know how these guys got their citizenship...they may have themselves gained it via blood transmittal from their parent(s).
