MOSCOW Russia warned on Wednesday that Benjamin Netanyahu's pledge to annex the West Bank's Jordan Valley could escalate tensions as the Israeli prime minister geared up to hold talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
The Russian Foreign Ministry said it was concerned over Netanyahu's plan, saying its implementation could lead to a "sharp escalation of tensions in the region (and) undermine hopes for the establishment of long-awaited peace between Israel and its Arab neighbors."
Moscow pointed out that Netanyahu's pre-election pledge drew a "sharp negative reaction" in the Arab world and reiterated its call for direct talks between Israel and Palestinians.
Battling to win re-election in Sept. 17 polls, Netanyahu issued the deeply controversial pledge on Tuesday night, drawing firm condemnation from the Palestinians, Arab states, the United Nations and the European Union.
On Thursday, Netanyahu plans to travel to the Russian resort of Sochi for talks with Putin as he fights to continue his reign as the country's longest-serving prime minister.

Russia is a pityful wannabe and doesn’t matter
So far as Israel is concerned, Russia doesn’t matter
Disagreeing politicians flying into Russia is a bad idea. Just ask the Poles.
The main reason Putin doesn’t want military conflict in the middle east is because every time Israel successfully strikes Iran’s bases in Syria it proves how ineffective Russia’s anti-aircraft systems are -— making them worthless on the weapons market.
A bully president and suicidal captain don’t help either.
Was reported today Iran has built a military base in Syria very soon to be completed with thousands of Iranian military and missles
Good, let Iran waste what little Obama bucks they have
left, and Israel IDF and IAF will mow down their towel
heads.
The same folks (usual suspects) who blamed Israel for building it's wall, that has saved countless lives.
They're less useful than a bucket of warm horse sweat.
It was part of Israel in the beginning.
When Russia gives Crimea back to Ukraine ...then we can talk about not annexing the Jordan.
Yep...... That’s hard on sales
You’ve got it reversed.
Since you annexed Ukraine, I think we’ll annex the Jordan Valley.
What’s good for the goose....
Absolutely is was
“When Russia gives Crimea back to Ukraine ...then we can talk about not annexing the Jordan.”
And yet, Crimea was part of Russia for longer than the U.S. was an independent country. Khrushchev was Ukrainian and gave the Crimea to the Republic of Ukraine without bothering with all their legal formalities, something you can do, I suppose, when you are the Soviet Premier!
Israel should treat the Jordan Valley as theirs because it is.
