Remembering September 11: BOATLIFT, An Amazing Tale of 9/11 Resilience
September 11, 2019 by gCaptain
As the World Trade Center buildings burned and collapsed on September 11, 2001, a half million people were evacuated from Lower Manhattan by a civilian flotilla of ferries, tug boats and other vessels in what became the largest boatlift in history. BOATLIFT An Untold Tale of 9/11 Resilience, is a touching tribute to that effort.
In this short film, Tom Hanks narrates the epic story of the 9/11 boatlift when the local maritime community sprung into action to help their fellow New Yorkers and Americans. The film is executive produced by Stephen Flynn and Sean Burke and premiered on September 8, 2011, on the 1oth anniversary of the attacks.
We like to post this video every September 11th to remember and honor the role that these mariners played on that day in 2001. Never forget!

Article in Nypost about this. 800 mariners rescued 500k people. (Dunkirk 300k) Largest evacuation ever. Manhattan is an island. US Coast Guard put out a call for help.
Sept 11 sky today. Deep blue no clouds.
Boatlift was truly amazing with its massive volunteer help, as were so many on nine-eleven.

When the Prin came on the PA and asked staff members who had relatives at WTC I stuvk my head in the hall and asked two teachers on their prep petiod what was going on. The said “ two trains hit the Trade Center!” I said in reply “ How! There’s 50 miles of visibility out there!” Then I got it, but the memory of the sky that morning sticks, as I saw the skyline silhouetted in Azure as I drove to school that morning.
I was on one of those boats crossing the river that day.
Vincent Ardolino’s NY accent was music to my ears...

How can people not be proud of America? THIS is America!
Alan Warren, director of ferry operations for NY Waterway, said at least 14 of his company's boats bravely responded. "We don't think - we do," said Warren, explaining that his crews routinely train for all types of river emergencies.
Thanks God for people who "do."
