C.I.A. Informant Extracted From Russia Had Sent Secrets to U.S. for Decades

Officials did not disclose the informant’s identity or new location, both closely held secrets. The person’s life remains in danger, current and former officials said, pointing to Moscow’s attempts last year to assassinate Sergei V. Skripal, a former Russian intelligence official who moved to Britain as part of a high-profile spy exchange in 2010.

The Moscow informant was instrumental to the C.I.A.’s most explosive conclusion about Russia’s interference campaign: that President Vladimir V. Putin ordered and orchestrated it himself. As the American government’s best insight into the thinking of and orders from Mr. Putin, the source was also key to the C.I.A.’s assessment that he affirmatively favored Donald J. Trump’s election and personally ordered the hacking of the Democratic National Committee.

The informant, according to people familiar with the matter, was outside of Mr. Putin’s inner circle, but saw him regularly and had access to high-level Kremlin decision-making — easily making the source one of the agency’s most valuable assets.

Don’t worry. No one can actually kill the NYT’s imaginary friend. You can’t see him, his identity can’t be revealed, and he can’t be questioned. And he knows all Putin’s thoughts without being in his inner circle. All the Putin thoughts he knows just happen to be the ones the NYT was thinking too. It’s magic.

"......according to people familiar with the matter..."

Yep! Of course those "people familiar the matter" are several Wapo journalists who got their info directly from the LA Times who got their info from reporters at the NYT...

“The source [was] one of the agency’s most valuable assets...”

Yesterday upon the stair,
I met a man who wasn’t there.
He wasn’t there again today,
I wish, I wish he’d go away...

The problem with assassinations of ‘Putin’s critics’ is that every assassinated person is a has-been posing zero threat to any Russian interest at the point of assassination. Another point is that for the very reason above they become useless for their handlers who still has them on payroll.
All assassinations times along with major international events designed to normalize Russian ties and dominate the topics of these events resulting in its failure.
Who are to benefit?
In case of UK the assassinations are useful tools to take attention from scandals. The pattern is clearly visible.

I think this is a fraud. We had very few agents who were able to maintain themselves in Russia for very long.

I consider this story just another phony dossier story.

The NYet Time are a bunch of master Red baiters

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Red-baiting

Red-baiting is an informal logical fallacy that intends to discredit the validity of an opponent’s logical argument by accusing, denouncing, attacking, or persecuting an individual or group as anarchist, communist,[1] Marxist, socialist, Stalinist, or sympathetic towards these ideologies.[2] In the United States, the term red-baiting dates from at least 1927.[3] In 1928, blacklisting by the Daughters of the American Revolution was characterized as a “red-baiting relic”.[4] A term commonly used in the United States, red-baiting in the United States history is most often associated with McCarthyism, a term which itself originated in the two historic Red Scare periods of the 1920s (First Red Scare) and 1950s (Second Red Scare).[5]

Communists on the Left have been alleging that Donald Trump is disloyal to the Untied States and a puppet of Russia.

The same stinking Commies who sucked on Stalin for 50 years saying that the deaths were exaggerated etc etc. Red Asner wanted to portray Stalin to highlight his ‘good’ works (”What ELSE did he do?”)

OUR CIA? And we’re to BELIEVE that foolishness about Putin wanting Trump to win? Ha! Who made THAT up -— Brennan or Clapper? The ONLY reason Putin might have done so, is that he vastly underestimated Trump, and though most have, I highly doubt that Putin did. LIES and more LIES!

To your recollection, what in this story is new and what is recycled?—I recall hearing some of this and its debunking a while back. My take is that the NYT is trying to give Nadler & Co. a pretext to revive the Russia collusion narrative in time for the election campaign.

Maybe some little-known CIA cell still doing actual espionage, my, my, my.

I was thinking the same thing...the thought of Japanese soldiers in island caves fighting WWII years after it was over...

probably goes with the Democrat’s new efforts to change traditional impeachment protocols and blow generations of precedent.

Would not believe a word of this. It’s all fake news. They’re trying to set a narrative that will support impeachment by making the claim that Trump released classified info that caused this source to be exposed thus impeachment is the only remedy. And much like the Russia Collusion narrative, it’s all made up from whole cloth.

Well, the old Russian gag was “Pravda ne Isvestia, Izvestia ne Pravda.” There is no news in Pravda and no truth in Isvestia.

-- Just more stuff made up by the MSM. --

Made up stuff fed to the MSM by the US government.

Oleg Smolenkov exists, is living openly under his real name with his wife Antonina (also an ex-employee of Russian government) in a million dollar home in Stafford, Virginia, a suburb of Washington, DC.

Russian writers are questioning his access to valuable intel.

“The KEY to everything is Steele.”

Every time Steele is/was mentioned, something similar to this is said, “Steele, was was determined that Trump not be president, ...”. So he’s British; what’s it TO him? He needs to get his nose out of U.S. business and “ tend to his knittin’” (as Mom would say). Can’t he get involved in his own country’s politics?

I’m surprised if any Moscow informants survived Hillary’s email dump. Unless, the Russians wanted to keep him alive.
