Reliable China insiders hint that this round of trade talks could lead to a ‘breakthrough’
CNBC ^ | Sept. 5, 2019 | Yun Li

“There’s more possibility of a breakthrough between the two sides,” said Hu Xijin, editor-in-chief of the Global Times, a tabloid under the People’s Daily.

Hu has been spot on with the recent developments in the escalated trade war. Most recently, he had warned about the Chinese retaliation just hours before China’s official announcement.

A blog called Taoran Notes has been followed by analysts covering China and market participants for cues on the trade battle.

In a 1,200-word commentary, Taoran said it’s “very likely” there will be “new developments” in the upcoming trade talks.

Would be nice, I admit, but I haven’t the tiniest doubt the Chinks will be lying, if they claim they’re folding.

China needs a deal more than we do. Their backs are up against the wall. They will not fold completely, but the US is definitely in the power position to dictate terms.

Better off with the tariffs. No deal is ok by me.

.... the media wouldn’t be able to take it.

In fact, some way they would find a way to credit O’Bambi.

They may be finally realizing Trump wants a FAIR deal, not an abusively advantageous one like China long had. Culturally they have a combative/domineering mindset; we want mutually fair and beneficial, and will fight existential total war to get it (once we stop accommodating abuse for peace).

Agreed. they’ve shown their true colors in many instances (South China Sea, Taiwan, Hong Kong) What is the point of allowing them to get any stronger? Triple the tariffs.

Reliable China insiders . . .

Those would be the insiders that steal our intellectual property?

Agreeing and doing are two very different things. I know Trump is smart enough to understand that.

An embargo. Extreme short term pain and huge long term gain.

Trump needs a deal more than China does. If the economy craps out in the next 8 months he loses the election, a shamed 1-term rejectoid. China doesn’t care if their people starve in the streets.

With China, you’re always just one or two problems away from a wonderful agreement and prosperous future. But you never seem to get there....

China and its Communist trade manage literally EVERYTHING in their country. Trade and anything having to do with foreigners especially goes to the top of that list. China will NEVER give up micro-managing and centrally-planning its trade for is own advantage. It doesn’t mean USA companies can’t buy and sell there, but everyone should be crystal clear China will always emphasize its own strategic advantage and you exist in China purely at the pleasure of the CCP and government mandarins. I don’t care what kind of “deal” the US makes.

Ha...just wait till 10/17/19 when the US exits the Postal Union...Trump gave notice to the PU last year of intention to quit

Cuts off the Chicoms from subsidized postage to the US.

I learned in Econ the principle of substitutes and price. When a good or service’s price is too high relative to the value to the consumer, the consumer will search for substitutes.

In this instance the price of dealing with China is too high compared to the value received. I am fairly certain that there are countries in that region that would make excellent trade partners on more favorable terms than China offered. Those countries, I suspect, are already becoming a substitute for China. The longer this goes, the less likely China will be able to unring the bell, so to speak.
