McConnell: GOP would 'absolutely' fill Supreme Court seat next year
The Hill ^ | 09/03/19 | Jordain Carney

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) pledged Tuesday that Republicans would fill a Supreme Court vacancy in 2019 or 2020, arguing the dynamic is different now than when the party held open a seat in 2016.

Asked during an interview with radio host Hugh Hewitt if Republicans would support filing a vacancy on the Supreme Court in 2019 or 2020, McConnell said "absolutely."

McConnell has earned fierce pushback for blocking Merrick Garland, President Obama's final Supreme Court nominee, from getting a hearing or a vote. But he's said that Republicans would fill a vacancy ahead of the 2020 presidential election. He has argued that there was a divided government in 2016, but there would not be in 2019 or 2020 because Republicans control both the Senate and White House.

"You have to go back to 1880 to find the last time, back to 1880s to find the last time a Senate of a different party from the president filled a Supreme Court vacancy created in the middle of a presidential election. That was entirely the precedent," McConnell said on Tuesday about his decision to block Garland.

As though the Democrats wouldn’t do exactly the same thing, were the circumstances reversed. This is another attempt to bully the GOP into giving in to the Dems. Bravo to McConnell for refusing to cave this time.

Not going to happen.
Soros has put Dr.Frankenstein on perminent retainer. The current remaining liberal justices will “live” for another 100 years, or until the next democrat Senate, whichever comes first

The would try. I can think of about five or six Republicans who could well vote against it.

If Ginsburg or anyone else retires in 2020, the Democrats will howl about the “rule” that you don’t fill a Supreme Court seat in a presidential election year.

But after we saw what the Democrats did with Kavanaugh, I figure we will see political “Armageddon” regardless of when a vacancy happens, and regardless of who Trump might nominate.

The Democrats have decided that they need to go to war on federal court vacancies, not only the Supreme Court, but for the lower federal courts as well.

Now that the filibuster is gone for Supreme Court nominees, I don’t know what Chuck Schumer and company can do to stop a nominee, even if it violates the “rule” that you don’t fill a Supreme Court vacancy in an election year.

McConnell can say whatever he wants. He doesn’t have the votes next year unless POTUS nominates a Garland type “moderate” RINO. Collins, Gardner, Murkowski, etc.

Which is the "rule" that McConnell quoted to justify not giving Garland a hearing much less a vote so you would think their howling would be justified.

The Democrats have decided that they need to go to war on federal court vacancies, not only the Supreme Court, but for the lower federal courts as well.

That war started when Regan was president and has been going on ever since.

I just found out my middle daughter, who married an Israeli american and is due with my first grand daughter in October, is going to give her a middle name of “Ruth”.

We thought that was pretty cool. I just taught a sunday school class about the book of Ruth a couple of weeks ago.

Then I found out it is because my daughter is a huge fan of RBG.

Please don’t hate me. I raised them the best I could...

Seeing RBG on TV, she’s not too healthy. Not sure if she can hold out another year.

Even in this the rats are lying.

This was known as the Biden rule (he espoused it a long time ago), which was supposedly at the end of the second term of a president, during his lame duck year. Not during an election year.

The rats would break that rule in a heartbeat anyway.

Doubtful. Collins, McSally, Bennett, and maybe Tillis are all in tight races. Hypocritically voting for a nominee of Trump's after hiding behind the Biden "Rule" in 2016 might cost them their seats and they know it. Murkowski, Romney, and maybe Sasse might try and look all morale by claiming they will respect the Biden "Rule" and vote not to confirm when their real reason would be to stick it to Trump. So I could see five to seven GOP 'no' votes easily.

Biden "espoused" it in 1992 at the end of Bush's first term.

A message and a chance to enjoy a few remaining months with family. She would be wise to take it, and tune out to the screams of the left if she does.

You must have missed the last midterm election. Flake is gone and we picked up four new GOP senate seats. Collins and Murkowski can suck eggs next time around. They likely won’t vote against a woman nominee anyway. Amy Coney Barrett is next up.

************************************
I think a more appropriate “pledge” at this time would be for McConnell and Graham to confirm, before the end of 2019, all of Trump’s pending judicial nominees as well as those whose names he submits in the next several months,

And Lindsey Graham needs to stop allowing DemocRATS to stop Trump’s District Court Judge nominees by using the Blue Slip process.

Jug Ears was at the end of his second term, term limited out and a “lame (schmuck) duck.” Maybe if Jug Ears hadn’t been so lazy, Merrick Garland might be on the court today. That’s the difference.
