When the Romans went to arrest Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemene, Peter pulled out his sword and cut off a Roman solder’s servant’s ear.
Jesus told Peter to put his sword away, not throw it away.
So, we know the apostles were armed and we know Jesus didn’t tell them to disarm.
When the Lord gave the Law to the people of Israel, the Law provided that he who kills in self-defense shall not be penalized. So, the right of lethal self-defense goes back to the ancient Hebrews and was affirmed by Jesus himself. Unfortunately, it being about 1,200 years before gunpowder was discovered, he wasn’t able to comment on guns, just swords.
It was a mixture of officials that arrested Jesus...only in John does it mention Romans in the mix and it was High priest Caiphas’ servant Malthus who had his ear cut off by Peter. It was not a Roman soldier.
So, we know the apostles were armed and we know Jesus didnt tell them to disarm.
There is a time for everything, including war and peace. This was not the day for swords to be drawn. One should not conclude that theres never a time to draw swords, one should conclude that God knows these things and have faith that He will tell us what action to take and when.
The Bible commands us to defend our lives and the lives of the innocent. Can’t do that disarmed.
