New York City is losing more than 270 residents each day, more than any other city in the United States, according to census data analyzed by Bloomberg. Driving the Big Apple residents away are high taxes, staggering costs of living, and a significant decline in quality of life. While local politicians watch swaths of people pack up and leave, they continue to prioritize rank partisanship over smart policy. As a result, the great exodus is likely to accelerate in the months and years to come.
New York City is home to the highest tax burden in the nation. Its residents fork over an average 12.7 percent of their income in state and local taxes annually. The 2017 federal tax law only drove up middle and upper income New Yorkers tax bills even further by capping state and local tax deductions. For many New Yorkers, the extra cost is the straw that broke the camels back, instead of coughing up the additional cash, residents simply move to low tax havens like Texas and Florida.
Rather than incentivize high-earning residents to stick around by lowering the state and local tax burden, year after year Governor Andrew Cuomo pushes new taxes and fees to raise funds. Cuomo and the state legislature extended the 2009 temporary millionaires tax earlier this year, prolonging the policy originally set for sunset in 2012. But much of the resulting increase in revenue is offset by the sheer number of workers fleeing. In February, Cuomo announced a surprise $2.3 billion hole in the state budget.

Why would anyone move out of New York City?
I’m sure to those who think New York is the center of the universe, they can’t fathom why anyone would not want to live there? They probably think everyone wants to move to New York, rather than move out.
As the largest city in the United States it has more people to lose.
A growing number of Americans are realizing that any town, city and state governed by the left is a pretty f**ked up place to live!
Then they move and vote for people who f*** it up just like the place they left before.
And it has more losers.
New York seems like a place, of which we could say, it’s a nice place to visit, but I wouldn’t want to live there.
New York has some great attractions, such as all the performing arts, Broadway shows, etc. And there are world class museums worth visiting. But everyday life there is another story altogether.
New York is losing more people than San Francisco or LA?
That allows Gov. Gavin ‘Nuisance’ to exhale a sigh of relief.
It was fun to live there for awhile, but I don’t miss it. About the only thing somewhat cheaper in NYC than the surrounding areas is fruit/produce sold by the street cart vendors.
Taxation by out of control Democrats.
Sadly, you’re right.
As a 47 year resident of California, I can attest to that. We bought a place in North Idaho and are working on deciding whether to say good bye to CA forever. The mild winter weather is nice as is the abundant hiking and outdoor beauty. But thats about it anymore. The current political climate is completely insane.
“But everyday life there is another story altogether.”
Running along the river in the am, then taking a walk to Central Park and just hanging out there for a bit was nice. That said, lots of things in NYC become routine and thus boring. Plus, if you have allergies, it’s a tough place to live.
Quality of life. Too many zombies Tax gulag. Too crowded and too stressful. Better places to live.
What’s the big surprise? Due to dim/socialist policies our major cities are turning into shit holes.
‘New York has some great attractions, such as all the performing arts, Broadway shows, etc.’
yep, some gay old times can be had at the opera house...
“For many New Yorkers, the extra cost is the straw that broke the camels back, instead of coughing up the additional cash, residents simply move to low tax havens like Texas and Florida.”
I pity Florida and Texas.
Not necessarily. I have a bunch of NYC, NJ transplant friends here in southwest Florida, and all are pretty conservative, not to mention Christians.
Punish the achievers long enough and even the most die-hard New Yorkers will leave.
