DPS = Department of Public Safety. I think Louisiana has such a Department as well. It’s a holdover term from when the lands were under the dominion of French as Louisiana.

They carry out duties currently performed by the State Police in other US states. As in other places, they are called State Troopers. Their patrol cars say “State Trooper” and, in smaller print, “Department of Public Safety.”

Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS)

Yea, why was he stopped? One story says the police either know who he is or have a good idea. Probably find out he is a felon, never should have had a gun, and was in violation of probation.

DPS is Department of Public Safety in Texas. I’m not Texan but I think it’s a melding of State Police and Fire Departments in other states would be.
