IBM has been accused of firing thousands of older employees over the past few years as part of a rebranding strategy to appeal to millennial workers.

Some former employees have filed lawsuits against IBM. In one civil case, former VP of Human Resources Alan Wild said IBM had "laid off 50,000 to 100,000 employees in just the last several years" in order to make itself seem like "[a] cool, trendy organization," like Google or Amazon, and not like "an old fuddy duddy organization." These statements were obtained court document filed Tuesday in Texas

It isn’t just IBM. Fire the employees who have been there the longest before they retire on the company’s dime. New hires are paid much less than someone who’s been with the company for 20 years.

Reducing overhead. Fire the $150k senior folks and replace for 1/2 the cost.

The NYC Bored of Ed did the same thing to older teachers. They deliberately gave senior teachers low ratings who had always had excellent ratings. They actively recruited the students to write false statements against their [targeted] teachers so that the teachers could be brought up on bogus charges and terminated. Etc. And their new little baby teachers now have no one with more than a few years of experience to look to for answers if they are having a hard time with troublesome kids or lesson plans. Plus, 40% of the newbies leave after 3-5 years, taking what experience they gained to suburban venues, so the students mostly have right-out-of-college baby teachers. Great policy...

Absolutely. Those of us who face this know it all too well.

The quality of the project deliverables turned to crap.
And I was supposedly old. 37. The engineer who took my place was a recent Berserkley graduate who could do no more than spout Mao and fume about the patriarchy, as well as brag about the last rave she went to.
She cheered for the tanks at Tien An Mein Square, and she’s second generation Chinese. Talked like a Valley Girl.

Especially if said older worker is a white male.

Yes, but it makes the stockholders happy to cut costs. Never mind the loss of experience and knowledge from the company.

I was "removed" from my job after being on it for a bit over 30 years. Layoffs in the company had been occurring for at least the 6 years prior to my layoff (lots of WARNs passed out). Most were "experienced" workers. The rest were deadwood who were never going to amount to much.

It probably didn't help that our portion of the company has had to deal with the business hostile environment in California.

I know of a small company whose business model is based on hiring young staff right out of school and then keeping them around for a few years until they lost interest or get impatient with the lack of career progression and move on. They don’t put this in writing, but their goal is to lose these younger employees before they reach the age of 26 or 27 and are therefore no longer covered under their parents’ medical insurance. Pretty smart, eh?

Yeah, but they put up all the statues that caused all the riots ‘n’ stuff.

Barack turned America into “Idiocracy”. I’m sure his father the Devil is well-pleased.

The level of stupid across America with these people is off the chart(s).

Or, just hire young women.

Then, pay the laid off workers to come back as contractors and do all the real work.

IBM should be free to fife and hire staff without snowflakes filing lawsuits and the government getting involved.

Get over it!

Fools. Is there a Marxist feminist in charge of IbM? Like JnJ, they are feeding these idiot millenials who then sue them for the opioid crisis.

As a dude mentioned, why do we have octavenerian politicians but an old dude who is fully qualified must be let go.

Instead of hoping for illegals and millenial leeches to pay off social security, let the old men do it and in charge.

Agreed.

In fact, I would rather my employer contribute to a catastrophe fund for me similar to a 401k that I can draw on if needed. And at the end of the day be much cheaper to the employer than carrying health insurance for me.

And let me carry that fund like a 401k.
