Harry Truman in 1948, JFK in 1960, Bill Clinton in 1992 and 1996--all were elected with less than 50% of the popular vote. If Carter cracked 50% in 1976 it was by the slimmest of margins.

Since the Civil War only 3 Democrat Presidents have won 51% of the popular vote--Franklin D. Roosevelt, Lyndon Johnson, and Barack Hussein Obama.
