First thing I would say to everyone at a party in New York is “Hey, how y’all doing”, and they would know right away oh we got a Southerner here. I’d be busted after one sentence.
I’ve heard that expression in person may be 10 times in my lifetime :)
If you don’t include TV and movies.
I was 6 when we went to visit the southern states so I don’t remember it.
And most of the other times I heard it, it was a yankee trying to sound unique :)
