NRA: President Trump Assured Us He Isn't Going After the Second Amendment

In the wake of back-to-back mass shootings in El Paso and Dayton a few weekends ago, gun control has again been launched to the forefront of public debate as craven politicians demand we "do something" in the wake of the inexplicable attacks.

According to Democrats, "doing something" means destroying traditional, good and responsible gun culture in America through "universal background checks." They want to do this by making it illegal to pass family firearms to future generations. Anti-Second Amendment advocates have also demanded a ban on semi-automatic weapons (which is essentially every firearm in America), a ban on "high capacity" magazines, due process violating Red Flag laws, confiscation and more. Some 2020 Democrat presidential candidates, like Senator Kirsten Gillibrand, want to throw gun owners in prison.

President Trump gave an address to the nation from the White House earlier this month where touted Red Flag laws. During remarks to reporters he said "frankly, we need intelligent background checks."

....mentally ill or deranged people. I am the biggest Second Amendment person there is, but we all must work together for the good and safety of our Country. Common sense things can be done that are good for everyone!— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) August 9, 2019

According to the NRA, President Trump assured the organization during a thirty minute long phone call Tuesday afternoon he isn't going after Second Amendment rights.

I spoke to the president today. We discussed the best ways to prevent these types of tragedies. @realDonaldTrump is a strong #2A President and supports our Right to Keep and Bear Arms! – Wayne LaPierre— NRA (@NRA) August 20, 2019

During remarks to reporters yesterday, President Trump warned of a "slippery slope" when it comes to new gun control measures.

"We are in very meaningful discussions with the Democrats.  And I think the Republicans are very unified.  We are very strong on our Second Amendment.  The Democrats are not strong at all on the Second Amendment.  I would say they’re weak on the Second Amendment, and we have to be careful of that," Trump said when asked if he would support gun control bills already passed by the House. "The Democrats would, I believe -- I think they’d give up the Second Amendment.  And the people that -- a lot of the people that put me where I am are strong believers in the Second Amendment -- and I am, also.  And we have to be very careful about that.  You know, they call it the “slippery slope,” and all of the sudden, everything gets taken away.  We’re not going to let that happen."

In the meantime, Congress is still back home for August recess and will return to Capitol Hill in September.

Trump achieved his goal, getting by the news cycle to where people have moved on from the shootings.

“Lose the 2nd and expect to lose the rest.”

That’s the left’s main goal.

Party pimps amnesia.. Does the bumpstock ban ring a bell.
Then throw in red flag rules proposal. That establishes a pretty clear pattern.
He is anti 2A. NOAA, the weather folks can have fully automatic weapons, why can’t we?

Exactly!

The President may falsely believe there was no cost in the bumpstock ban. There will be and a half a million bumpstock owners staying home in 2020 could mean no second term. If the President signs ANY gun control measure he will not be reelected.

We also need to keep pointing out there is no Constitutional authority for the federal government to arm non military government agencies in ANY capacity much less with military arms.

As an aside, Mr. LaPierre. Show some magnanimity and grace and resign any association or profit from the NRA. Your greed has left the entire organization suspect with its members and, since the left has admitted their intent to erase the 2nd, we need all the strength we can muster.

Do the right thing. Don't be a jerk.

“Anti-Second Amendment advocates have also demanded a ban on semi-automatic weapons (which is essentially every firearm in America)”

Ludicrous. Far more revolvers, bolt action, lever action and pump action weapons in America. The author is ignorant of “American gun culture”.

That said, I like the way Trump handled this. He gave an amorphous, non-committal “yes” to the gun grabbers in the heat of the moment, then started the “slow walk” and qualifying statements.

And now it’s fizzled in the minds of America’s mothers.

And nothing will come out of the passionate outrage on the left.

That’s right, throw the whole government over to the far left and make sure the 2nd Amemendment is totally destroyed. That’ll show them. Liberal Supreme Court and lower courts, reestablish all the regulations Trump eliminated and pull down the wall and open the borders. All for the sake of bump stocks that 9 out of 10 gun owners couldn’t even tell you what they are. BRILLIANT!!

Due to our complacency, unfortunately we’ve already lost much of the Second and the rest.

Seriously, you’re trying to equate the next election to a choice of the lesser of two evils. There’s a clear choice for president next year, and it’s the man presently in the office. His stand on the second amendment may not be rock solid as everyone would like, but to stay home and allow one of the socialist Democrats to win. Get real. President Trump has proven in so many ways it’s not business as usual from the Oval Office. The country can’t risk putting a RAT into the White House at this moment.

After some thought on this, I think his intentions are good WHEN he gets the full and correct information. I think because he is such a busy man as President, he is trusting heavily on his advisors to keep him very well updated to sentiments of the people. But the advisors are filtering information and giving their own opinions instead of sharing the true sentiments of the people.

So I don’t think he is always fully updated on how truly serious certain topics are to folks. I think he may be putting too much trust in opinionated incompetent monitoring of public sentiment because he doesn’t have time to do it himself. So far the public has had to holler pretty damn loud to get his attention and make him rethink his positions, it is not getting correctly relayed to him as it should be.

Sorry, but you will need to convince the half a million bumpstock owners of your wisdom as I’m not one of them but rest assured they are out there all five hundred thousand of them all of whom certainly voted for and helped give us President Trump in the first place.

Absolutely... Because we trusted far too much in those who promised to protect it and did not holler loud enough when we should have to get their attention and make sure they rethink the situation before even going there.

I agree 100% which is why we must do the hollering so the President gets the message.

I agree, While I trust his intentions and commitment to the people, it is just as important to make sure he also strongly gets the message from public sources outside the circle of advisors. While we might trust Trump we CANNOT trust the middlemen he is getting his information from to formulate his decisions.

Absolutely! It’s the people around the President giving him swamp biased information that are the problem. This is the reason I believe the number of bumpstock owners was lowballed. This was to make the President believe there was little risk in pushing for the ban. This was a huge mistake as he can scratch a half a million votes that he got in 2016. Owners of bumpstocks had either to turn over property to the government with no compensation or they are now in possession of an unregistered machine gun. ( A very serious and aggressively prosecuted felony) They will not be voting for President Trump and as I stated the actual number is likely more than a half a million.
