Modern intel has gotten technical and sophisticated - for me; but some principles never change: planning, security, access, finance, compartmentalization, communications, cover and support, exit - or escape, closing the door... When an operation is blown, examination begins to reveal some of these elements.
Mifsud was the only player to 'disappear'. Some FBI folk became unavailable but Mifsud disappeared, even rumored dead. Why did he reappear? Because his role in the scheme no longer posed a threat of exposure. Meantime old Rip van Mueller labeled Mifsud as a Russian asset - a near impossibility unless FVEY & FSB had merged for common purpose.
Now we see why Mifsud disappeared. If he was interrogated he could reveal that the counter intel coup operation had already (prior to July 2016) been planned, financed with organized communications and compartmentalized -- Mifsud's compartment's role was to initialize the basis for a FISA warrant.
So who controlled Mifsud's compartment? We may not find out but my gut tells me: Stefan Halper.
