NBC ^ | Sept. 5, 2014 | Charles Q. Choi

Despite being one of the poorest nations in the world, Afghanistan may be sitting on one of the richest troves of minerals in the world, valued at nearly $1 trillion, scientists say.

Afghanistan, a country nearly the size of Texas, is loaded with minerals deposited by the violent collision of the Indian subcontinent with Asia. The U.S. Geological Survey began inspecting what mineral resources Afghanistan had after U.S.-led forces drove the Taliban from power in the country in 2004.

The worlds largest strip mine would be an improvement to what exists now.

Now all they have to do is figure out how to turn those minerals into opium.

There is nothing Afghanistan has that somebody else won’t take away from them.

“Maybe the Chinese would like to take a crack at it.”

The chicoms, IMO, have the stones to do what is needed regarding assimilating a population and exterminating the resistors.

The Chinese have been intherefor years. They show up with piles of cash, not droning weddings.

You should do more reading on the history of the Afghan people. They are mostly tribes that come together to fight the invader, and then they go back to their tribal life. The tribes ARE generally independent. Thecities are wherethe Taliban worked their magic.

The Afans will trade the minerals for lead and continue their tribal existence.

Lesson...stay away from that place.

Rebel base: You’re right. There’s enough Chinese to flood the country into submission. If the get killed what’s a million Chinese? Plenty more where they came from. I say let them have the whole Middle East.

But in order to get those minerals, someone would have to mine them. And like cobalt and copper in the Belgian Congo, as soon as you do that, the natives squawk that they're being "exploited," the corrupt government moves in and nationalizes the mines, and the mining interests lose everything.

Of course, soon after that, the mines start to fail because the natives aren't smart enough to maintain the equipment and the corrupt rulers suck all the money out of the venture, leaving the populace eventually with less than they had before except large holes in the ground and a bad reputation.

Add to that the presence of islime and you have a country not worth investing a bent shilling in.

Was there in 03 with a “humanitarean” org. We were delivering blankets and meds to some pretty out in the middle of nowhere. Never seen such beautiful mountain ranges and valleys. We stopped on a dirt road at the top of some mountain and we were waiting on trucks that were with us. Our translator got out and was doing the Ghengis Squat and picking stuff out of the road. I went over to him and asked him what he was picking up. He opened his palm and said, “rubies”. there were 5 little stones dirty sitting there. He pointed at the mountains and said we have everything here; emeralds, gold, silver, rubies, diamonds.

If it was profitable somebody would have already done it. And poppy fields are much easier to farm.

If that’s the case then the Chinese Empire will die in Afghanistan.

I’m all for letting the Chinese have at it.

That land is a black hole for any nation or empire.

...It is my understanding that there is a significant lead time to get mining productive, and there are also some environmental issues to be dealt with...

We have managed to tie ourselves in knots over environmental "issues" but other countries won't be that stupid.

Essentially we have rules that say if we dig something up from some Godforsaken spot in the desert, there are a bazillion things we have to do before we can put the leftovers back in some other Godforsaken spot in the desert. We don't add anything toxic, just move it from one place where nobody wants to be to another one pretty much like it.

There is California’s Mountain Pass Mine for rare earth minerals.

Shenghe Resources Holding Co., a Chinese minority shareholder, acquired Mountain Pass in July 2017 with the goal of reviving America’s rare earth industry. The venture does business under the name MP Materials.

*** As of now we’re till in-charge in Afghanistan. ***

I believe our peace talks with the Taliban in which we cede the country to them shows our great success there.

I own a half dozen pigeon blood Afghan rubies that are valuable. Afghanistan produces some of the most desirable and most valuable rubies in the world.
