The reaction to President Trump's sudden interest in buying Greenland from Denmark has been mostly one of derision. And Denmark, which owns the territory, appears to oppose any sale.
But don't laugh an American purchase of Greenland could represent an extraordinary deal in terms of America's national security, economic interests, and environmental protection.
As much as it might seem out of the blue, U.S. acquisition of Greenland is not at all a strange or irrational idea. Following Denmark's fall to Nazi Germany in 1940, American forces defended Greenland. The roots of American-Greenland comradeship are thus old and formal. In 1946, one Harry S. Truman even attempted to purchase Greenland for $100 million. Was Truman crazy? On the contrary, he was the president who ended a global war and set America on its ultimate course to defeat the Soviet Union.

Truman is another Dem whod be run out of the party on a rail these days.

It would be like having our very own national ice machine!
Here’s a better idea - We wipe out their debt, take Greenland and give them Puerto Rico. Give the Danes someplace to go in winter.
Greenland is where the Baltic sea dwelling vactioners go in the winter
We should see if they will take a basket of beads and trinkets for it.
I’ll put in $10.00
Throw in Puerto Rico
Is it even for sale? Would definitely trade even for Puerto Rico.
President Trump probably sees it as the real estate deal of a lifetime.
In 20 years it’ll be the world’s #1 destination spot.
;)
Isn’t most of the land sinking, or due to be covered in water soon? That’s what I keep hearing. Some say due to climate change. Whatever the reason, if this is true, that needs to be considered.
They called Alaska Sewards Folly. Well call this one Trumps Triumph...
Except countries aren’t really for sale anymore.
BS. Truman's reckless defense cuts and inept foreign policy led directly to the Korean War and almost lost the Cold War before it got started.
Typical Dem. He was the product of local Dem machine politics and hired a Sec Def who was a crony with no defense experience, a hatchet man whose job was to take money from defense to finance universal health care.
Mao saw the weakness, but he was inept too in his overreach. MacArthur (another specialist in overreach) bailed Truman out in 1950, then tried to squander his amazing victory as he invited nuclear war.
Truman's reputation is a media creation and his seriousness in the 1946 Greenland offer would have likely faded away quickly had Denmark showed real interest in making a deal.
“Isnt most of the land sinking, or due to be covered in water soon? “
We need to be carefulof of what we say.
Don’t know nothing about no TRUMP real estate deals...
But down at the flea market, yes talk the item down a bit, but be careful not to insult the seller, flatter him.
When he says AGW will increase the value, gently inquire about future flooding...
Yes, it is a fine line, but the pros bring home the deals!
Isnt most of the land sinking, or due to be covered in water soon?
No.
I bet you if the US offered each of the 56 thousand residents something like $100,000 tax free, plus US citizenship, and promise of investment, plus some billions to Denmark, we could buy Greenland. Greenland residents would love to get the money, the investment, and US citizenship. It would be a big win all around.
Well, we could just take it. What’s Denmark or the 56 thousand residents of Greenland going to do?
Ive been saying we should give PR back to Spain. Call in the Spanish ambassador and foreign minister, apologize for the war, Sorry guys, big misunderstanding, heres PR back! Your problem now!
Declare it to be sovereign soil to both countries. Nobody pays taxes but the proceeds from exploiting its resources are split evenly between both countries after territorial costs are paid, its residents do not have representation in our Congress (Denmark can do whatever it wants), but can vote in elections like other territories.
If we want to build a base there, we can. So can Denmark. Each country is free to spend more than their allotment, and the two countries can decide on whose bureaucracies (like TSA or FAA) can better serve the land.
