Flahertys mother, Caroline, has for two years qualified for in-home care paid for by the states Medicaid program. But the agency could not find someone to hire amid a severe shortage of workers that has crippled facilities for seniors across the state.

What about all those refugees? Arent they working? /sarc
Lots of Somalians in Portland. I imagine the benefits are appealing enough for them to tolerate the weather.
So I guess everyone who wants “free” eldercare is going to Maine.
I’m imagining a bunch of Somalis *caring* for a bunch of elderly white Mainers in nursing homes.
Not a pleasant thought.
It’s not a very appealing job.
Low pay, driving around in blizzards, dealing with messy and psychologically disturbing maladies that afflict the elderly.
It’s why it’s a job best done by families out of love.
Few would opt for it as a chosen career.
Move to Florida like the rest. Winters anyway.
Who minds cold weather when the state is furnishing Sec. 8 housing and heating it as well.
Keep aborting your children and facilitating gay “marriage”, America, and this is your future.
I thought Maine waa full of Somolis? The Somalis are known to be hard-working and caring people. Most likely they will volunteer to help these elderly people.
Maine? And youre talking about real winter there!
No wonder people want to get the hell out of there
I thought there were large clusters there because that is where the government resettled them. If you want an example of a welfare magnet try Lawrence, Massachusetts. There was once a man running for Governor who wondered aloud why so many people from Tropical regions would come to such a cold place.
I live in Limestone Maine for 4 years population of 2314. The state of Maine comes in at number 3 for Tax Burden ranking with Hawaii (11.71%) and New York (12.97%) above it.
Total tax burden is 10.84%.
Could it have something to do with Politics and Taxes... Wonder how much taxes do they charge companies.
They’ll just have to pay health care workers and handymen enough to induce them to relocate there. The marketplace will raise the minimum wage enough to fill the jobs.
And, to do all that for $5/hour.
It’s what happens when people value economic success and careers over creating families.
My son and DIL just got back from a week on the Maine coast.
The local eateries hire visa workers from Eastern Europe for the season. The locals don’t want the work.
Last winter here in Maine was rather mild.
Lots of rain storms last January and February rather than snowstorms.
Most of the Somalis are centered in Lewiston and Portland.
I’ve lived here for 27+ years and saw my first Somali at the Sam’s Club in Bangor a few years ago.
Lots of Jamaicans and Haitians in Eastern Maine doing seasonal agricultural work and cleaning seasonal motel rooms.
