We moved to the Knoxville area soon after these murders. The sadness in the atmosphere was pervasive, and lasted for years. It was like a punch in the gut to everyone, even those who didn’t know the kids.

I feel the same way, even all these years later whenever I see a story about this horrific crime. I guess it resonates with people due to the randomness of the crime and the absolute terror these innocent kids must have felt in their final hours. It's both heartbreaking and infuriating to think about. I can't imagine the pain that the families are still feeling and how they have been able to hold it together without seeking some kind of retribution. They are better people than I could ever be and I wish them peace and comfort.

On a lighter note; how are you enjoying the Knoxville area? Did you relocate from another state? My wife and I were in the Eastern Tennessee area on vacation last year (Townsend) and absolutely loved it. We spent a day in Knoxville and even went to a couple of open houses in Maryville as we are looking to move to Tennessee (from NJ). Fortunately we didn't see any of the more ghettoized areas but they obviously exist in parts of Knoxville.

Given the economics of the respective areas and the work opportunities; it is more likely that we will move to Middle Tennessee within proximity of Nashville, which we will be visiting in October.

We love being in eastern TN. It reminds us of our homestead area in western, very rural, Bible Belt, NY state. The scenery is gorgeous (you were in Townsend, so you know that). The people are “real” and sincerely kind.

The story is that there are three distinct Tennessees. Eastern (Knoxville) - conservative. Middle (Nashville) - middle of the road but trending liberal. Eastern (Memphis) - ugh! uber liberal. We found useful information at www.city-data.com.

We came from southern California in 2010 when Obama was destroying the military and missile defense industry (my husband’s job) in CA. He found a position here in Oak Ridge, and then retired from there.

The flag of Tennessee has three stars representing the divisions, East, Middle and West.

Some might think the state flag is orange with a big white T, but it is not. (joke)

For the record, I'm from Kingsport which is in Upper East Tennessee

I can't tell you the actual division lines but one is near Rockwood where the time changes from eastern to central zone. The other division line is west of Nashville, before you get to Jackson I think.

Really? The three stars are for the three separate areas? I wondered why three.

The orange... when we first moved here we went to Home Depot where the staff wears orange, and nobody would help us. We saw people wearing orange EVERYWHERE but they weren’t asking to help us. Turns out there was a football game later that day and everyone was dressed for the occasion.
