Insane reaction on the part of Hopkins administration. To do his job, the professor needed to get to the basement in a timely basis to take care of the IT set up he was in charge of. The students were breaking the law. The administration has foolishly been coddling them for many weeks, possibly longer. As a graduate of Hopkins, I am ashamed that they fired the professor, but this is the political correctness that has ruined all the once solid universities.
Anyone with Johns Hopkins University “accreditation” is now an uneducated Front Hole with valueless credentials.
“CNBC reported Monday that Povey has been hired by Facebook to work in the field of speech recognition in their Seattle of
fices.”
Isn’t that akin to going from the frying pan into the fire? How long does he think he’s going to last at Fakebook?
Just wait until he digs into the Facebook accounts of the protesters. LOL
Communism had a good foothold in Johns Hopkins in the 30s (my uncle went there, knew some of the top CPUSA members, and also broke the “Jewish quota” for students -he was smarter than most of the professors, IQ around 180 - became a doctor elsewhere and told JHU to go fuck themselves when they wanted him to come to their medical school.
Owen Lattimore had ties to JHU and was invited to speak there by a flake of a chaplain (Chester Wickwire), who I met (and he bragged about bringing identify Communist and possible Soviet spy Lattimore to speak there after having been disallowed for many years. Lattimore eventually moved to England and, surprise, surprise, ended up teaching a court on “Marxism” at Leeds University).
Go to the article, there are links to the dismissal letter and his very long blog posting. Read them and form your own opinion.
The university says he was being fired because he defied prior instructions to stay out of the building and that his actions led to a unnecessary and potentially dangerous confrontation.
His blog post...well, just read it (if you have the endurance). The salient fact comes at the beginning. He admits he did go to the building with a group of (? status unclear) to have a confrontation and got one. The rest deals with a lot more than just maintaining the servers.
Seems like insubordination to me.
Johns Hopkins was relatively conservative, compared to other schools, when I went there. It has a reputation for an overly intense grade-oriented atmosphere. However, I don’t agree that everyone who went there is uneducated.
Hopkins has the Applied Physics Lab, which develops high technology things for the Navy. It has a reputation as a particularly tough school. I don’t agree with it being radical or a worthless degree.
This sounds like a win-win.
Radicals take out a Facebook speech recognition research specialist. (Facebook owns “What’s Ap.”)
It's their brand, now.
It's very similar to being able to mock Haavaad and Yale graduates about their "bought" fake degrees, ever since AuntBeckyGate.

You can by your way into any of these places, and they take people for hooks like connections, the coach wants them, etc. That doesn’t quite make them fake degrees.
Hopkins is very intense, and it is harder to get grades there than some Ivies. It has a bad atmosphere with half premeds and the other students act like premeds. They eliminated the honor code because premeds were openly cheating in groups. It isn’t really a fake degree, but if it makes you feel better to think of elite schools that way, go ahead.
I, and others, have already made our decisions about the JHU brand.
You'd best be on your alma mater like a heavy sweat over this BS, before the brand is further eroded.
