Why would you choose someone in his nineties to preside over a case?

Makes no sense. A guy that age probably made frequent use of the "I'm so old I don't buy green bananas any more!" joke. Why would he be expected to last through a prolonged trial?

I’m sure his clerks did all the work; he was likely selected because he was compliant, and the rulings would go the way the government wanted. (MOO)
