That itself is not all that unusual. Epstein may have been facing state charges in addition to the Federal ones.
And the NYPD was actually involved in the Weiner/Abedin computer "find" before the FBI was. That case was originally investigated by NYC Child Protective Services because Weiner sent lewd photographs of himself to his "sexting" partner with his kid sleeping next to him. Someone called the police and the NYPD picked up the case. They immediately seized his computer, and that's when the whole Abedin e-mail debacle unfolded. Weiner's case didn't become a Federal investigation until they learned about the underage girl in North Carolina.
This was no “mishap”, just like the “investigation” will not be an investigation.
There is a bunch of DC waving of arms to try to keep the plebes happy—at the end of the day the “report” will be nothing but redacted pages of nothing.

He may be a marginally NeverTrump RINO talk show host, but Hugh Hewitt also used to be General Counsel for the Office of Personnel Management.
About a decade ago he spent his entire show going over the various levels of protections and appeals and arbitrations available to Federal employees, and basically proved that it was IMPOSSIBLE to actually fire one.
