Two months on and nearly 2,000 rounds of tear gas later, what do Hong Kong’s protesters really want?
South China Morning Post ^ | 08/10/2019 | Gary Cheung and Alvin Lum

When Hong Kong was brought to its knees on Monday, Jay Sin, bespectacled, masked and helmeted, was in high spirits and in a hurry.

He had to be in many places. “We’re trying to make it more difficult for police to plan their operations,” Sin said when the Post met him at the Cross-Harbour Tunnel in Hung Hom. By then, he and his fellow protesters had walked more than 4km from Mong Kok in the summer heat, leaving a trail of destruction in their wake.

On the tunnel billboard above him, his comrades had already spray-painted the catchphrase “Liberate Hong Kong; revolution of our times”.

If this was a revolution, Sin was the archetypal freedom fighter. Reed-thin, dressed in Bermudas and a black T-shirt, and geared up to hide his identity, he was polite when explaining their actions.

Before rushing off to his next target, the 22-year-old said: “We understand we’re creating lots of trouble for the public. There is a cost incurred by a social movement.

“We hope what we are doing will draw people’s attention to what is happening in Hong Kong.”

What is happening in Hong Kong is indeed a question exercising the minds of many. Friday is exactly two months to the day since the June 9 mass protest when an estimated 1 million people took to the streets to oppose the now-shelved extradition bill.

But that first protest – a peaceful one where people wore white to symbolise how they were at a funeral marking the death of Hong Kong – seemed like a more innocent time.

Since then, there have been nine consecutive weeks of demonstrations, nearly all resulting in clashes with police.

RE: Independence from China.

Well, prepare for a bloodbath then.

This would be like California demanding independence from the USA. Are we going to allow it?

“Independence from China.”

They want to be like Taiwan, independent regardless of what China and the rest of the world ‘officially’ calls them.

Well, China isn’t too keen on that, and when needed, China will make its position quite well understood. I sure hope the people in Hong Kong are ready for the bloodbath they’re going to have to deal with, because, like it or not, no country will stop China, nor could any country.

China I guess will just let the riots die out eventually. As for CA, seems they’ve already left.

Maybe not in years past but you know there would be plenty who would say, let them go. Imagine, federal troops sent into California. That would be plenty interesting.

Same thing everyone has wanted since man's oppression of man began:

FREEDOM!

Why not? It would do wonders for the rest of the country.

Its time for the protestors to pack it in, go back to their schools or work and organize themselves into a potent political force.

While the average HK person supports the intent to remove the extradition law, the constant protests shutting down the city center, the subway, main shopping areas, etc... are starting to cause average people to turn against the protestors.

Let's start with something smaller like Puerto Rico first.

This “headline” was surely written by operatives of the Butchers of Beijing. They remember, with horror and contempt, the “Goddess of Liberty” which, curiously enough, looked a lot like the Statue of Liberty.

Hang on! Are you *sure* you want to put it that way? I'd *welcome* Kalifonia declaring its independence...as long as we could build a 40 foot high, twenty foot deep, and ten foot thick, border wall around it on the very day they become independent!

This is why we have a 2nd Amendment.

Sure, for the time being, even if HK citizens were armed to the teeth, China could still crush them. But, the cost to China would be astronomical. And in the long run...
