1979 'Orange Socks' cold case victim identified as Debra Jackson of Abilene (TX)

Williamson County officials have finally identified the woman who was found dead about 40 years ago wearing only orange socks.

Sheriff Robert Chody made the announcement on Tuesday, revealing more details in a press conference on Wednesday.

The victim has been identified as Debra Jackson of Abilene, Texas, who died at the age of 23 from apparent strangulation. She was found dead on Oct. 31, 1979, off of Interstate Highway 35 north of Georgetown in a concrete drainage ditch near Walburg Road.

Even though notorious serial killer Henry Lee Lucas was convicted of her murder in 1984, her name remained a mystery. Though he was convicted, he later recanted that he didn't kill the woman.

"I'm hoping we have a witness still alive, somebody that says, 'I knew Debra and I saw her leaving with, you know, Henry Lee Lucas,' or whoever it was. That's what I'm hoping for," said Sheriff Robert Chody.

At the press conference Wednesday, Sheriff Chody said the major breakthrough in the case came when a family member contacted officials after seeing an updated sketch of the victim. She was later confirmed through DNA testing to be the victim's sister.

Henry Lee Lucas confessed to thousands of murders. Hey, keep admitting to crimes keeps you out of the electric chair. His homosexual partner, Otis Toole, also confessed to countless killings. Any unsolved case between Texas and Florida was attributed to them just to clear out cold cases. Otis was convicted of killing Adam Walsh. With today's standards of evidence I doubt either could be brought to court.

I thought we already knew Orange Socks was from Abilene but I don't see any reference right now.

A friend of mine was living in a woman's guest house. I had the unfortunate task of informing my friend of the woman's murder. Of course, the cops immediately said it was Lucas or an illegal alien. Never did find her murderer. Don't think it was investigated much past pinning it Lucas and closing the book. My friend was never questioned and never saw a cop car in the drive.

FYI, Abilene is about 200 miles from Georgetown.

While it seems to have taken place before the Arkancide problem, I hardly ever hear of an unsolved murder in that region of the nation without thinking of that dynamic.

At least Debra’s family will know where she is.

Now really impress us, guys, identify the murderer (assuming it wasn’t Lucas, or verifying it was...)

I wouldn’t be caught dead wearing orange socks.

Though he was convicted, he later recanted...

Recanted his conviction? That’s funny. They must mean he confessed and recanted.

...

Many serial killers are homosexuals. The percentage is much higher than their proportion of the population.

Just remembered, my summer intern back then said his cousin (?) had been killed by Lucas. See, everyone’s murder was attributed to him.
