The United States and the Taliban have resolved differences in peace talks over the withdrawal of American troops from Afghanistan and guarantees from the insurgents that they will cut ties with other extremist groups, a Taliban official said Tuesday.
The U.S. side did not immediately provide details about the latest round of talks held in Qatar, where the Taliban maintain a political office. But Zalmay Khalilzad, the American envoy who has been leading the talks since they began late last year, tweeted that they had made "excellent progress."
The two sides have been meeting for the last two days, and technical teams were continuing discussions on Tuesday in Doha. The Taliban official spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to discuss details of the negotiations.

LOL
Bravo
Get out of that place!
Be careful of what one wishes for.
Taliban should all be dead or in prison.
To be honest, after Vietnam I'm surprised anyone would take our leadership seriously when it comes to these military campaigns in Third World dumps.
Taliban: *rattle*
Obamy said there was no more Taliban.
Does anyone seriously believe these lying sacks of donkey crap?
There have been serious rumblings of a game changing deal in the works.
The Taliban themselves are local warlords in a traditional Afghan sense, of crime lords who take on a patronage role for the people of their network, and enforce local dispute resolution. They want to be rich, much more than they are interested in International terrorism (except as a potentially lucrative criminal racket).
ISIS, al Queda and other jihadi groups, are mainly foreigners - attractive to the Taliban on religious grounds, but perhaps more for the capabilities and money they can provide. Unlike the International jihadi terrorists, the Taliban typically identify first as Pashtun tribesmen, before as muslims. Brass tacks pocketbook issues also usually trump religious motivations. There is also some rivalry that exists between the Taliban and the foreign jihadis over money and power.
Because of the Afghan character and culture (not afraid to fight), it has long been difficult to have a strong central Government. An internal political settlement among Afghans, without foreign enforcement, is likely going to be more chaotic than in Japan or Switzerland, and more likely to include more intermittent shootings.
But if the income is sufficiently greater, they will likely go for a deal.
It WOULD however, be as great a feat as re-unifying north and south Korea, or ridding our nation of evil democrat/socialist/communist (choose your own ID) party which I believe is happening now.
They are so desperate to stay alive they're more actively calling for 16 year olds to vote, promising $1,000 a month for every one, giving every decadent desire away for free and just plain acting foolish.
Prtesident Trump will bring about such a change in the democrat party that before he leaves office, the democrats will have disappeared and they will have re-named themselves.
Now, the chances are they'll be just as or more evil than the democrats, but they will have been forced to get away from the stigma of being a democrat.
Damn! just Damn!
A well thought out rational statement. Here on an Afghan thread on Free Republic.
You over stated your case by many times what it was worth.
The answer is America did what needed to be done in spite of whining from the peanut gallery
Honestly.. I think its just a money scam. They know we wont fight to win.
Think of the trillions of taxpayer dollars. Free taxpayer money.
Its almost like getting a phony government research grant.
I don’t believe it. Our troops are still dying. 12 this year. They should be all taken out of Iraq and Afghanistan ASAP.
Let us leave and let them go back to the heroin business.
All I’ve heard for years and years is that it’s too hard to fight them due to the rugged terrain. WTF?
Doesn’t make us sound very competent.
If they mess with us again, don’t send troops. Send big ass bombs that will smooth out that terrain.
America did what needed to be done when a few seals drove Osama bin Laden over the mountain passes. All the rest, all the money, all the blood, all the limbs, all the lives were spent for virtually nothing.
Wars are waged in the national interest or they are utter folly. Please describe to me, a poor ignorant Dennison of the peanut gallery, what national interest was served in Afghanistan?
Whose life are you willing to sacrifice to do "what was needed to be done"?
You better give us a pretty convincing explanation of your answer to the following before you commit the nation to war and brave soldiers to death:
did it make us safe from another 19 terrorists with box cutters?
