Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) said on Monday that he will introduce bipartisan legislation encouraging states to create "red flag" laws and that President Trump is "very supportive" of the idea.
Graham, in a statement, said he has reached a deal with Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.) on a bill that would start a federal grant program to help and encourage states to create "'red flag' protection order" laws, which are meant to make it easier for law enforcement to identify mentally ill people who should be banned from purchasing guns.
These grants will be given to law enforcement so they can hire and consult with mental health professionals to better determine which cases need to be acted upon. This grant program also requires robust due process and judicial review. It does allow for quick action," Graham said in the statement.
He added that he spoke with Trump earlier Monday "about this proposal and he seems very supportive."
The forthcoming legislation comes after a gunman on Saturday killed 20 people and wounded dozens more in an attack at a Walmart in El Paso, Texas, on Saturday. Less than a day later, at least nine people were killed and more than two dozen were injured in a Dayton, Ohio shooting. The two shootings are not believed to be linked.
Trump highlighted "red flag" legislation during his speech from the White House on Monday as one of the proposals he would support in the wake of the two shootings. He did not discuss gun background check proposals, which are being pushed for by Democrats in the wake of the shootings.
Graham added in his statement on Monday that he would introduce the bill with Blumenthal in the "very near future," adding that he hopes senators from both parties "will join us to finally move forward in the effort to keep guns out of the hands of dangerous people.
I appreciate President Trumps strong statement rejecting hate and white supremacist ideology, urging us all to reject a culture of violence, as well as a call to action on multiple fronts," Graham added.
Shitting on the Constitution isn’t the appropriate reaction
Let’s tie it to immigration reforms which are also a safety threat to our citizens.
Here we go.
Linda has gone full McCain Mode.
Aren’t these shooters all already under the tender loving care of mental health professionals?
I’m sure that will work out just as well as the FISA court has. /SARCsarcsarcsarcsarcsarc
This red-flag movement is about as bad as it gets. Far worse than even bans on particular types of weapons.
This will essentially mean that anyone that has something against you, and knows you have a gun, can say you said something, report you, and you lose your gun(s) without any due process at all. This one needs to be fought hard, or all gun rights are effectively nullified.
I can also see it hitting the Supreme Court. And what the ruling there would be is anybody's guess.
Once all these red flag laws are enacted mentally ill people with violent tendencies will avoid seeking treatment at all costs in order to avoid being tagged.

So now government can investigate and treat citizens as criminals without any crime having been committed
How many amendments can they destroy with one knee-jerk, crappy bill? let’s see: the 1st amendment, 2nd amendment, 4th amendment, 5th amendment - any others?
Put your “Red Flag” back in your panties Linthy.
Mentally ill people should be locked up. But not just on the say-so of anyone, who just may not like them or want revenge for something.
They should be examined by a competent neurologist and if determined indeed that they are crazy, then they should be locked up.
Nothing will happen, the pinks and rrds only want the issue, and the issue is there revolution.
And just how would it have prevented the shootings from this past weekend? Were either of them diagnosed as mentally ill?
People who can’t tell a boy from a girl are not going to be able to make accurate judgment calls on this topic either.
Almost all of these murders have a common thread, the perps are angry to the point of mental imbalance or they are mentally unstable. Lawful citizens who purchase guns don't commit gun crimes, imbalance people do. Now figuring out what that means is not easy, but let's at least start discussing it. Many of these kids show outward signs of significant hate and message their willingness to act out - let's start here rather than go down the confiscation route. With rights come responsibilities.
Flimsey Grahamnesty needs a primary challenger.
who determines whom is a red flag and how?
Crap the feds cannot even handle issuing the laws they are supposed to enforce now. Another one on the books that violates the constitution is what the feds do best though
