The ship was seized on Wednesday near Farsi Island, where an Iranian Guard Navy base is located, the news outlet reported. The island sits in the Persian Gulf between Saudi Arabia and Iran, north of the Strait of Hormuz.
Further information on the vessel, and the nationality of crew members, was not immediately clear.
The seizure marked the third such incident involving a commercial vessel in recent weeks and the second accused of smuggling fuel.
The U.S. Fifth Fleet, based in Bahrain, told The Associated Press it did not have information to confirm the reports. Maritime tracking experts also said they did not have any immediate information about the incident or the vessel.

Anyone else see these acts by Iran as deflections aimed at provoking the US to help unify the dissidents on the home front in Iran?
Is the worldwide glut of oil tankers still a problem?
Is the worldwide glut of oil tankers still a problem?
Iran can’t sell all it’s oil due to sanctions. Therefore they are in desperate situation. Economy is busted.
AIS tracking map shows an unnamed tanker sitting in an Iranian port.
I see no ships docked in Iranian ports except a search and rescue boat
FWIW, I think this has more to do with INSTEX.
Interesting that they are stopping the smuggling of Iranian Oil, which I guess was stolen?
I don't understand. That allows them to get around sanctions with respect to the EU. How does attacking that ship make sense?
Seizing themselves ?

Let me see if I can find it again. I found it depends on which service you use, some are more detailed and show more vessels than others. Also draft is an issue for a vessel that size and would have to be anchored out further from the actual port, especially if loaded and displacement is maxed out.
It just says “Tanker... Position received via satellite”.
Could be it? The red dot in the center of the map.

I may have steered myself wrong, I found two more in that area that are also unidentified. Can’t get details because they are behind a paywall at this site.
Was not the tanker seized ENTERING the Gulf? Why would a tanker load up Iranian oil and head the wrong way? Refining it? I doubt that the Gulf State refineries are looking to work with Iranian crude for technical reasons — more trouble than it’s worth.
