When a person (ostensibly) takes a stand on an issue, he runs the risk of alienating some people -- perhaps, people who weren't deserving of his respect in the first place.

But when he backtracks from his position, he loses everyone. The people who complained have effectively silenced him, and the people who supported his stance have now lost all respect for him.

NEVER backtrack from a moral stand.

When you backtrack from a moral stand it just shows you never had any genuine moral fiber in the first place.
