Column: Sports leagues will need to revisit cannabis rules as more states legalize weed
Los Angeles Times ^ | Aug. 1, 2019 | LZ Granderson |

My name is LZ Granderson and I smoke pot. Not in a wishy-washy/Clintonesque “I didn’t inhale” sort of way, but rather in a depending-on-what-time-you-are-reading-this-I-could-be-high-right-now sort of way.

Because I’m a black man of a certain age with a head full of locs, this proclamation could easily be met with a cynical shoulder shrug followed by “of course you smoke pot, look at you.”

How about trading card companies producing complete sets sponsored by the local pot shop? /sarc.

My question is, why?

I work for a very large company and their policy on illegal drug use is unchanged. They randomly drug test.

It's something you don't do because their rules prohibit it. Why should sports leagues comport themselves any differently in this regard?

I’m less worried about sportsmen than DRIVERS.

Jeez, will people get their priorities straight.

This ranks pretty much much near the top of my “I don’t give a crap” list.

There was an outfielder for the Washington Nationals about ten years ago that was rumored to be a frequent user of the Devil’s vegetable, and the way he wandered aimlessly around right field whenever a ball was hit in that direction seemed to confirm it.

I sense the correlation is that marijuana has the ability to aid in certain medicinal instances. I can’t say for sure since I don’t have the knowledge on the topic but according to some there are benefits. Perhaps it has to do with some athletes and how their bodies suffer distress at earlier ages than the average person.

Actually a lot of companies are re thinking that policy as it is getting harder to hire staff in those states who don’t pop positive.

I didn’t read the whole article, but I suspect the writer’s point is that sports leagues are facing a growing quandary where they are outlawing a narcotic that is getting increasingly LEGAL over time.

And a lot of companies that would love to change their drug use policies are being warned by their insurance carriers to proceed very cautiously.

It’s all going to come down to testing that shows actual THC level and correlate that with impairment and not just use.

Imagine if the blood tests for driving or employment showed use of alcohol within a month instead of actual levels and impairment.

“They randomly drug test.”

Only transportation workers and those with security clearances are subject to random testing, anywhere.

Keep smoking that weed, snorting that coke, popping those pills, cooking that crack, and drinking that alcohol. A drug addled populace is much easier to control. Socialism here we come!

The way sports teams are accommodating "pride", I suspect this issue will mainly affect the concessions.

I was told that random testing in the military consisted of taking many samples and testing a relatively small number of them. The deterrent effect was great, and the cost minimized.

In all fairness, it’s not exactly a “performance enhancing” substance, so we can rule that one out.

I think that nurses and others in medical fields may be subject to random testing. Also many on probation or parole are, regardless of their occupations.

Military tests everyone for common drugs, and then randomly puts samples through less common drugs. You’d be surprised what they catch. Seen people piss hot for Xanax. It’s not just illegal drugs but also legal drugs without a valid prescription that get abused.
