Senate meeting erupts as Graham clashes with Dems over asylum bill: 'You're not going to take my job

The Senate Judiciary Committee erupted with infighting Thursday as a top Republican lawmaker pushed legislation aimed at crafting new rules for asylum-seekers from Central American countries.

Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., the chairman of the committee, faced immediate accusations as he brought up the bill that he was violating Senate rules. In a dispute that quickly got personal, Ranking Member Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., said the committee was one Democrat shy of having a quorum during a meeting last week and therefore could not advance the bill.

“Why even have rules?” Feinstein asked rhetorically. Sen. Patrick Leahy, D-Vt., backed her up, saying, “If the majority is willing to break any rule in order to report this bill today, there are no rules.”

Graham defended the move, stating the bill had been ready to move forward for seven weeks and Democrats intentionally did not show up last week in an effort to stymie the legislation.

“I’m not changing the rules,” Graham said, noting that the rules allow a majority of the committee to decide to vote.

Graham said that if he allows the Democrats to get their way, “the committee becomes irrelevant.”

“It would be different if I had not tried. For seven weeks I withheld marking up this bill and I got nowhere,” Graham said angrily. “What you’re telling me is I should ignore what you did to me last week. I will not.”

In an uncomfortable moment, Graham addressed Leahy directly, stating, “Senator Leahy, you’ve been here a long time. I would never have done this to you,” only for Leahy to state that he missed last week’s meeting “because a member of my family was being buried.”

Graham immediately offered condolences but noted that he had been told Democrats would not show up for political reasons.

Grahamnesty deserves no respect.

He’s been trying to give the country to illegal aliens with amnesty since 2006.

Nah. McCain had something he was holding over Lindsey’s head. Graham has been a different man since no name went to his just rewards.

Someone needs to check out Leahy’s story and see if he really was at a family funeral all last week.

Linda growing some balls?

I might start trusting Linda after about 6 more years of the same actions. It will take at least that long to remove the McCain stench from him.

As soon as he is re-elected, he’ll be right back to trying to pass the amnesty he’s been working on since 2006.

This won't surprise those of us who actually pay attention. Not.One.Bit.

“Why even have rules?” Feinstein asked rhetorically.

And Feinstein does not even recognize the irony of her own words in light of the immigration/asylum topic being discussed at the time of her utterance.

Sorry, but your math is way off or are you using the common core equations.
A term in the Senate is 6 years not 8.

Nevertheless Lindsey seems to be doing better after the long overdue demise of the Admirals Son.
We shall see.

“It WAS mccain and now it is Trump, they were saying.”

Yes and when he was in the House from 1995-2003 he hung around with Newt Gingrich and the Contract With America folks. (Good Times!)

Checking on things Lindseys parents evidently had children later in life. Lindsey was 21 when his mother died of cancer and 22 when his father died 15 months later at age 69.
It is very possible Lindsey is subconsciously looking for that strong father figure he didn’t have in his early adult years.

BTW, Lindsey took charge of caring for his 13 year old sister when his dad died. Guy can’t be all bad.

Perhaps some of that excess Trump testosterone has leaked over to Lindsey’s Senate office?

Nope. Lindsey is up for re-election and over many years I have watched him veer right a couple years before so he could state his supposed conservatism. As soon as he gets re-elected he immediately goes back to being a leftist swamp creature.

“Graham has been a different man since no name went to his just rewards.”

Very true.
Can Lindsey salvage himself from the damage forced on him by The Admirals Son?
Stay tuned sports fans’

No that’s a great thing he did.

And I agree about the father figure thing.

My pop died when I was young, 14.

I looked for that figure too until maybe mid thirties, even

Then I realized people will try to use it to their advantage and i already had a father and he was a damned good one.

And then I was good with it :)

Any body who believes that most people will do the right thing just because it’s the right thing is a fool.

All people act in their own best interests; whether it’s sex, money, or votes.
Just the people are.

It fits in with the lies we tell ourselves...

I would do that right thing [in my own definition], therefore everyone else will do the right thing [in my own definition].

The differences between what each person understands to be the ‘right’ thing creates issues as well as the wild card of sociopaths that have no morality at all except for “MEMEMEME”.

It is a rare person that wakes up and tells themselves “I am going to be the most selfish, rotten human being I can be today.” Most people convince themselves that they are doing right and making everything better, even when they are simply taking care of themselves.

“All people act in their own best interests; whether it’s sex, money, or votes.” It’s true, but our minds are wonderful things...we can convince ourselves that something which will benefit only ourselves is a universal good.
