Nature will try very, very hard to kill you. And it succeeds quite often.

Why?
What mistake did Krakauer make???
Jom Krakauer wrote “Into the Wild”...
He also wrote “Into Thin Air” about an Everest expedition gone bad...
Keith Richards outlives another young healthy person.
I got dragged in a river too.
My backpack was too bulky, and the current grabbed it and pulled me towards a large fallen tree under the water, which was kinda scary.
My walking stick saved me as I was able to jam it down into the river bed several times and pull myself out of the current like that.
Risky as Hell, and I was alone too. Moving water is dangerous.
Did she remember to donate her inheritance to charity first?
I remember taking a tour of Denali on an old school bus. It broke down as we crested a small hill. We sat and watched several grizzly bears in our vicinity while the driver got the engine started again. Interesting experience!
Stupid is as stupid does.
The end of the roaders are a headache for the Alaska State Police. Being inspired to undertake dangerous adventures by a book or movie rarely ends well.
Watched a friend of mine get swept away in less than knee deep water, (I REFUSED to cross).
His hip boots filled with water and he barely made it back to shore. He said that even then, as I grabbed his hand, he was still in fear for his life.
Had he made it to the deeper water, he would have drowned.
Seesh what a bunch of curmudgeons.
What’s wrong with doing and seeing things for the romantic nature of the experience?
Millions do, unfortunately this woman made a fatal mistake in dangerous territory.
When we lived in Alaska not a week went by in the summer when there wasn’t some loss of life in the news of man vs nature. Alaskans and tourists alike — made no difference.
I've crossed rivers there on horseback and it was a parlous experience.
On one occasion in the middle of summer, a teenage boy was crossing only a small stream with an ATV and fell into the water. He nearly died of hypothermia in minutes, he was put in a sleeping bag and another person was put in there to share their warmth with him. We built a fire and got warm liquids into him.
I can imagine that falling into a river would be so much more dangerous.
But did her new husband get it all on video?
This is the infamous Into the Wild bus the women was dying to see.
River crossing on the Stampede trail - near the bus. This is a low water pic. I check of the news stores related show people killing themseklves are getting stranded on the far side of the river - and require rescue. I've petitioned the State more than once to borrow a shithook from the Army Aviation unit in Fairbanks and recover the bus - taking to the trail head or just cutting the damn thing into pieces and flying the parts to the local landfill. You could argue the damned thing is an "attractive nuance".
This is terrible. Folks are lost to flood waters over normally dry creek beds every spring here in Texas. Folks think theyre safe in their SUVs and the rest is history. Year after year. Not sure how to cross a swift-flowing river? Unless your life depends on it, dont try.
On the other hand, you could lose your life to teens with the cops and help just around the corner. Just have some situational awareness. Avoid dangers.
I once had a fantasy about driving the Dalton Highway. But after having seen a couple of videos on it I’ve decided to vacation in Sarasota instead.
She died doing what she loved.
“Alaska is a beautiful, scary place that can mindlessly kill the unwary in seconds.”
Spent a year up there everywhere from Nome in the west to the Kenai in the east, and the one thing I learned was to respect the threats of living there. Any time you go into the wild for recreation, you better know what you are doing and be prepared to possibly alter your way of going. Alaska is the last frontier and a lot of it is still in the 1890’s Klondike thought process even in the civilized parts. They should have had a local with them.
