“The Democratic Party that my grandfather belonged to no longer exists in any meaningful sense.”
Begins with a false premise. That the “Democratic Party that my grandfather belonged” to was good.

I agree but having been born five days before D-Day and having grown up some ten miles from where it is now said that the first secession meeting took place I believe that even that party was vastly to be preferred over what it has become in 2019. In those days people who seemed far more sane than almost any democrat I can currently name were locked up in “asylums” to protect them from themselves. No one living then ever imagined that we would see such insanity become the norm for the Democratic party.
In the fifties we had political satire in the comic strips of the daily newspaper. As a boy I loved to read “Lil Abner”, “Pogo Possum”, “Snuffy Smith” and others and they came up with some pretty far out characters who could be recognized as Richard Nixon, J. Edger Hoover, Lyndon Johnson and others but no one living then could ever have imagined such absurdities as the creatures from the Dark Lagoon who are now raving and ranting in support of all things dark and evil. Not even in Bizarro World were such banshees imagined.
