I expect they're backtracking because they know that Clinton is gonna get wrapped up in the Epstein mess and they're simply trying to inoculate him or, more likely, themselves.

They're not worried about Clinton doing anything for them these days but rather they're trying to salvage their decades long excuses for his conduct.
