I’m wondering who objected to the term ‘manhole’ to prompt this change. Did women feel left out that there is no ‘womanhole’ designation? Did men resent being associated with ‘holes’?
Gosh; all the conundrums of modern-day semantics...
Its even worse. The term maintenance holes is non_specific and could lead to confusion. I prefer “vertical access shaft for underground utilities”.
A maintenance hole could be anywhere, any orientation, giving access to who knows what.
