Jeepney! Loved to sneak rides on them when I was a kid. Every get to grande island?
I hope we do get a deal with Vietnam for Cam Ranh Bay. It would be a great spot to see once I retire. My buddy and I plan to make a long visit there. Do some culinary and cultural tourism.
Well ok. 299 years then.
[Sweeten the deal for us, Rod. 30 year lease at 2 million per.]
Great bargaining chip. Subic Bay for protection.
China is going to need to get their p-p whacked in that entire region sooner or later.
Better sooner — before they build their military up any more than they have already
And get them off the disputed islands and make them restore the billions of $$$ of coral they destroyed in the name of ‘improvements’. Doesn’t the UN have some sort of EPA?
China couldn’t take on the Vietnamese in 79’. If the other nations gathered together the Chicoms wouldn’t compare. The little guys are waiting for us to do the heavy lifting. How about another SEATO? The ASEAN sucked up to the Chicoms.
Red China did take on the Vietnamese in ‘79; it wasn’t perfect; but they pushed in far enough to make a point. Vietnam had signed a defense treaty with the USSR the year before, and Red China showed it was a worthless piece of paper - the USSR did nothing as Red China easily grabbed several cities along the border.
I was thinking of something more close to reality, but this is free republic so sure.

Given the detailed study Japanese ruling clans made of Chinese history, to the point of naming an era after a similar Chinese period, you might suspect their methods were cribbed from the Chinese:
