Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer told a small group of reporters Tuesday that he will support legislation proposed by Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee (D-Texas) and Sen. Cory Booker (D-N.J.) to establish a commission to study reparations for slavery.
Why it matters: As the top Democrat in the Senate, Schumer's support strengthens not only the legislation's future, but also benefits a continuing conversation on the reparations issue.
It presents a stark contrast with his Republican counterpart, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, who opposes reparations for slavery. "What McConnell said was just preposterous and thats why Im supporting this legislation," Schumer told us. "In his actions as majority leader, he's done nothing to combat bigotry."
What he's saying: "Ive always believed racism is the poison of America," Schumer said.
Some of the opposition to reparations, he said, comes from those who maintain that slavery is a thing of the past. "The legacy of slavery and Jim Crow is still with us and thats why we need to do a lot more," he added.
Context: In June, Washington lawmakers held a hearing on reparations for the first time since 2007. That was technically a House subcommittee study of the lasting legacy of slavery and what to do to fix it.
While Schumer is throwing his weight behind the issue, he admitted that he's not an "expert" on this, saying he's going to follow the lead of what the commission ultimately decides is the right path forward. His pitch to colleagues until then: "When a significant part of America is held back, all of America is held back."
The big picture: It's been a week in which racism has been on full display in Washington, after President Trump told Democratic congresswomen of color to "go back" to where they came from. Pushing forward on a commission to study reparations is one way for the Democratic Party to publicly stand against Trump on the issue.
They are DESPERATE to keep the BLACK VOTE.
This proves it...................
Yet, the dims welcomed Sheets Byrd as one of their own.
Go ahead and pay it then, Chuckie.
Your not going to get even a cent from me.
And Schmuckie is in the racist poison party.
What? Again? I just wrote a huge reparations check on April 15 and another on June 15!!
Give them their 40 acres and a mule.
Is Schumer allowed to make this large an “in-kind” contribution to the Trump campaign?
Establishing a commision to study is in effect lifting the rug to receive the issue being swept underneath
The action is inaction
However, I agree there should be panic over losing the black vote.
That is nothing though compared to losing the votes of women who wish to completely disassociate from being stained by the current internal war.
So does Obama get or pay money?
I can’t wait! This is actually great news for Republicans.
Start asking questions and watch Chucky Studder
1. Who will get the money? Exactly WHO, how will that be determined?
2. Who will pay for it? How will you collect that money to pay?
3. Will people who’s family members lost lives in the Civil War for the Union be exempt since their family paid the ultimate sacrifice?
4. If someone just came here last week from Africa will they be eligible?
Keep asking the impossible questions and they will fold!
As an example, I never owned a slave, and no one alive today was ever a slave in America, in fact millions of families were never here during slavery. My family is all from Minnesota, all arrived after the civil war. How can you make us pay? Seems stupid. And all of a sudden, Republicans start taking over when people realize they are paying for other’s sins.
Some of the race-baiters are already saying that reparations alone are not near enough compensation. They want additional punishments meted out.
2020 lookin’ better all the time!
Big receiver of EPSTEIN MONEY.
So what else is there to give away ?They have done it all. This despicable scumbag just loves giving away our money
Those with white genes need not apply.
They already received their reparations
Chuck Schumer overboard.
You missed the part about this including the legacy of not just slavery but also Jim Crow. So if your family came over after the Civil War, it doesnt really matter. And while laws in the state of Minnesota may not have included Jim Crow provisions per se, Im sure there were sun down laws and so forth. Bottom line, if youre white youre a target.
