Meet Bronx resident John Cummings, a Republican and former Harbor Unit cop-turned-high school civics teacher who is mounting a long-shot bid to topple Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez next year.
But to just come from the outside and take somebody on is really difficult, Cummings told The Post in an exclusive interview.
The one-time bartender Ocasio-Cortez inspired him to run for her 14th congressional district seat.
It was pointed out to me by my students that Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez pretty much made my excuse and Ill use their quotes a lame one, he said.
So the 59-year-old Saint Raymond High School instructor plans to file paperwork with the Federal Election Commission Friday to declare his long-odds candidacy as a Republican in a district that Hillary Clinton won by nearly 58 points over Donald Trump in 2016.
The Bronx GOP said Cummings will be an attractive candidate and clear alternative to Democratic socialist Ocasio-Cortez.
Unlike AOC, John Cummings was born and raised in the district, said Bronx County Republican Chairman Mike Rendino.
He will be able to connect with the real New Yorkers in the Bronx and Queens who AOC takes for granted, Rendino said.
The freshman rep who sent shockwaves through the political establishment last year with her upset victory against long-term Congressman Joe Crowley didnt open a district office in Queens until two months after taking office.
Cummings has the support of consultant Chapin Fay, who served as public affairs director for former Gov. George Pataki.
Shell have unlimited funds, Fey acknowledged, referring to Ocasio-Cortezs grassroots fundraising juggernaut.
The lefty firebrand pulled in $726,000 during the first quarter of 2019.
But well have the resources to compete, Fey predicted.
Cummings followed in his cop fathers footsteps, joining the NYPD in 1983. He worked in the South Bronx then moved to the NYPDs Harbor Unit, where he suffered a knee injury

If he runs in the Democrat primary he may have a chance. Pelosi says a glass of water can win that seat with a (D).
He should run as D and vote like a Conservative if elected.
And a very nice seat it is.
He’s likely to become unemployed very soon.
Get her to Debate ,LOL

So with Mark Levin’s Mr. Call Screen there will be two Republicans that are going to run against each other in the Republican Primary. And no Dems challenging her in the Democrat Primary. Smooth move guys.
yeah, he is not going to win.
But imagine her in a debate with a civics teacher.
He could really make her a laughing stock and an Internet meme classic!
It would be worth it!
Correct. The district is D+20+. Long shot for a GOP. But someone has a shot to primary her. She won her primary with something like 8000 total votes because the party members mostly didn’t bother to vote in the primary. All someone needs is a motivated base. Like Pelosi said, a glass of water could win that primary.
I WILL donate to his war chest!
Wouldn’t it be delicious if he ran as a Democrat? The Democrats would say that only Democrats can run as Democrats. Then we get to remind them that Bernie Sanders is (officially) an independent.
He’s a CIVICS teacher!
He actually knows how American government is supposed to function!
AOC won that district because the majority of Dem voters sat out both the primary in 2018, and the RinoNC didnt bother to put forth a viable candidate.
Now the majority of her constituents hate her.
Yet FReeprrs are whining a civics teacher can’t beat her.
Shame on all of you damn defeatists.
President Trump has done more for the black community than any other President.
We complain about Dims plantations all the time. It is time for Republicans to stand up and appeal to these communities that there is a better way.
You go Mr. Cummings ... you will have my campaign $$$.
I bet funds will roll in from all over the country to help his run against AOC.
Her opponent last time around was an economics professor from I think it was Yale. She won by like 70 points.
As a Republican? Yeah whatever.
Only way she loses in that district is in the Democratic primary.
