SACRAMENTO California lawmakers are seeking once again to force President Trump to release his tax returns by blocking access to the state primary election ballot if he does not.
The matter is now in the hands of Gov. Gavin Newsom, after the state Senate gave final approval Thursday to SB27, which would require presidential candidates to release their last five years of income tax returns in order to be eligible for the primary election in California.

Unconstitutional - even stupid Jerry Brown knew it and wouldn’t sign that bill when it came up before. The states cannot add requirements to Presidential elections.
We don’t need to count the votes from this profoundly corrupt state, for President or for Congress.
The Ninth Circuit doesn’t know that. They will sign off on anything Newsuiance decides. The question is what will Chief Justice John Roberts do.
refuse to send in the federal tax return, site federal privacy laws and then file a lawsuit in federal court.
He has nothing to win in the California primary, In fact have him ask all Republicans who can’t vote for him to register and vote for a Democrat in the State Primary.
It should be fun to watch the Dem’s go crazy.
Disqualify all votes from California.
There are a dozen ways to deal with this even if it were legal. Trump could have a substitute on the ballot who campaigns on turning his delegates over to Trump at the convention. If California can have an “uncommitted” slate, they could be elected and vote for Trump. If Murkowski can win Alaska with real opposition with write-ins, Trump could do the same with token opposition. California could go to a Caucus system.
Skip the primary. He certainly isn’t going to need it to win renomination.
Correct. I completely lost faith in him when the SC ruled on Obamacare. That vote really got to me, as it forever changed the essence of the relationship between our nation’s people and our nation’s government. They are, and should always be, one in the same; with that one vote, this essential principle evaporated.
And primaries are associated w/parties. Gov can’t dictate to political parties.
they will lose their vote.
they should also lose all federal help..
I do believe that California has an open primary. You can vote for either side, just ask for that ballot.
have all Republicans register Democrat and vote for Bernie; if he gets enough delegates to be in contention at their convention, all hell will break loose.
Democrats: “When we lose, we change the rules”
Last 5? He’ll have been president for 3 of them.
California’s Russian ballot system already allows them to exclude Republicans from the ballot
The Constitution doesn't cover Presidential elections. It only requires that the state legislatures select a slate of electors to the Electoral College, by whatever means the state chooses. Holding an election is only one possible way. It isn't required. The states have carte blanche to decide how they pick electors. I see nothing unconstitutional about this bill.
It should be obvious however that Trump could refuse to comply and be omitted from the California ballot, and it would have no effect on his ability to win. He is never going to get the California electors anyway.
This sounds a lot like the electoral college. It would be a real smack in the face to California if all the Republican candidates ran via "proxies".
